I would have told the dealer something along the same lines but with the added swear words.
Would he have thought it satisfactory if he had bought it like that.

i have updated with MSV2 but seems the same

rear diff change sorted out the rasping noise in mine

at the time it sounded like the sound was coming from the front, but dealer tracked it down apparently with some equipment ie remote mic i think, to the rear diff

My RRS MY 2007 has this same metallic rattling noise for only 3 months.
My dealer tried to find the origin of this noise, without results.
He can reproduce this noise by puting the car on a two post lift.
This noise seems to come from the torque converter.
He disconnected the turbo, rear differential, transfert box, flashed TCM and ECM, noise is the same.
He changed the gearbox and the flywheel, noise is still here !

Francis, there's a reason this post is 9 pages long! LR know exactly what the problem is but it would cost them to much to fix s, as usual, they just say its a characteristic. I have a letter from them acknowledging the noise but saying its not a problem - arrogant ass@$*es!  RRS TDV6 Bluetooth, VR, Roof

Hi all, my first post so bear with me..I've read all of the post re:- the rasping noise and thought I'd add my thoughts.

I bought my 2007 2.7 HSE Sport 2 months ago...Having always wanted one and admired from afar I took the plunge...Chuffed to bits with the look and drive it was tip top..

A month later I notice a slight rasping noise as per everyone's description....The noise has increased and is most noticeable on the neutral throttle position..I can create the noise by rolling off the throttle and gently re-applying it and there it is..

I've changed the Diff Oils Front and Rear which has made no difference whatsoever...Logically, it sounds like a Chain chattering almost the same as you get on a Road Bike when rolling off the throttle on deceleration and I guess the only Chain that could cause this noise is in the Transfer Case?? But surely, the Technical people at ZF and Land Rover would have looked at this as it appears to be a no brainer which again leads me to think it can't be that unless they are overlooking the obvious...
That said, there must be other members that have thought the same and explored the theory further?
Anyone had any similar thoughts?

I have a 2006 RRS TDV6 Overfinch which drives very well except for a rasping/bearing type noise that I get when I take my foot off the accelerator between 1200 - 1500 rpm. The noise is anything from 1 to 3 seconds then stops.
Also when traveling at any constant speed between 1200 - 1500 rpm I get the same noise constantly. This noise will happen in all gears and sounds like its coming from the bell housing area. I took the car to an Auto Transmission Specialist who diagnosed the noise as being the torque converter. He fitted a new torque converter but the noise is still the same. He then fitted a new drive plate, flex plate, but still the same noise. I called ZF technical & they suggested that I change the transmission pump. I did this & the noise is still the same. I then changed the torque converter again to check that the one fitted wasn't a duff one. The noise is still the same. I have now bought another used gearbox complete with transfer box which I was told are in good working order. First I tried changing only the transfer box & then changed the gearbox too but the noise is still there.
I have measured the end float on the crank to be 0.3mm which I'm told this is okay.
I have spoken to Hunters Land Rover about this being a possible ECU software update, but they tell me that software updates only change the shifting but don't stop noises.
If I jack the car up & get all wheels of the ground, put it into gear & get someone to lightly go on & off the accelerator whilst i'm under the car I can see the torque converter moving about 1mm towards the back of the car whilst its making this noise. The torque converter is bolted to the drive plate, flex plate so it cant actually move much at all but whilst the torque converter is towards the gearbox the noise is there. Then the torque converter moves towards the engine & the noise stops.
I have removed the gearbox 5 times now replacing many parts but haven't managed to fix this problem.
Has anyone ever had this noise before or any ideas what it is or how to fix it.
I'm running out of ideas.. Please help!

So like many others I have this noise and have also read that it is the Torque Converter. My question is has anyone had a g/b failure because of it? Maybe we just live with it. Mine is in for g/b oil flush and change next week but I doubt if it will cure the noise

There's not really a direct answer to that.

The noise itself appears to be extremely common before any issues arise. On the other hand, once issues do occur, it is essential to rectify them as appropriate to prevent damage to the rest of the box. This may be a case of a flush, if caught early, or it might be a new TC. It can also be that a flush will postpone the TC but it's still needed later.

A very few people are also unfortunate to need a full box recon before issues become particularly prevalent. On higher mileage vehicles, there's also a risk that fresh fluid will make issues apparent that weren't before - though there is no alternative course of action in the end.

For now, you are doing the right thing by having the flush done preventitively. If all these vehicles had it done much earlier, we would not be in this situation now.
