Engine top end strip down

Hi

How do I take off the drivers side rocker cover? Is there a step-by-step guide on here on how to do this?

I am basically trying to strip off the drivers side rocker cover on my sport 2007 2.7 v6 as to see if any rocker/tappet damage.

Quite a bit of work.

Front cambelt cover needs to come off, as there is a bolt under there.
Injectors need to come out. (twist them a bit)
Fuel rail off.
Fuel rail mount off.

Do you know if there is a step by step guide on here that covers this work.

What is your thoughts on the noise I am trying to establish what it is, when I turn the key there is a noise coming from the drivers side top end rocker cover area that sounds like there is something loose within this area, hence me trying to take the rocker cover off to see if there is anything broken. Could it be a tensioner issue? The car doesn't start.

No step by step guide, but now you know the parts which need to come off, could be straight forward.


A noise when cranking the engine over ?


Yes could be a :

broken chain
broken tensioner
broken cam

Get the cover off and see.

If the tensioner is broken, there will be no compression on 3 cylinders

I suspect if it's noisy enough to be heard while cranking, something fairly major has let go Sad

Have you made sure the cambelt and/or tensioner is in one piece? Ha she it had a new oil pump fitted?

Thanks for all the replies. The guy that is currently having a look at it and heard the noise when turning it over first hand mentioned that I might be somewhat lucky. But like you say will need to get it stripped down to see first.

Disco_Mikey: Should I be checking the cambelt and/or tensioner is in one piece first before removing the rocker cover. No, I haven't fitted an oil pump recently. Would you advise I do a compression test first then to find out if it is a tensioner issue?

Andy K: when you say get the cover off do you mean the rocker cover first to have a look or the timing chain cover first?

Obviously no easy fix here, but I am just trying to establish what I should be stripping first, the rocker cover or the front facing timing chain cover.

Compression tests aren't easy on these engines, and I would almost say wasted work at this stage.
GlowPlugs are a nightmare to remove. Maybe a compression test can be done thru the injector hole?


Yes it's a good idea to get the cambelt cover off (as you mention its a 2007? Crying or Very sad and prone to problems)
and as I said above, it needs to come off to access a bolt anyway,

Saga so far goes something like this...

Turns out the 'catastrophic failure' of the (2007 model) weak oil pump casing happened to moi, I'm still in disbelieve after all this time that this could happen... anyways put it all back together, oil pump, flywheel timing, timing belt etc; etc; and optimistically turned it over with the key, gave it a good go but just didn't want to start. It felt as if it was actually at one point going to fire up but no it didn't.

So next chapter is to dismantle the left hand cylinder head first, why, cos the reasons below, if you have undertaken such a detailed job yourself before please chip in with your invaluable knowledge.

1) Noticed when setting timing the right hand cam only had tension, left hand bank had none, it freely spun with minimal force with a socket on it... this means?

2) Might it only be the left hand cylinder head that f Censored ?

3) To take the left hand head off I will need to strip down the timing belt again?

4) If/when I take off the cylinder head should I see visible damage?

5) If bent valves are the reason what are the chances the relating parts including hydraulic lash adjusters, valve spring retainers, roller rockers etc; will also need replaced?

6) If it is just the left hand cam side that is dead, I read somewhere on here that the car should start with 3 cylinders only, true/false?

7) To what extent of head damage should I consider a 2nd hand cylinder head replacement, rather than trying to fix the components within the damaged head itself?

8 Any other useful advice at his most desperate of times Thumbs Up would be greatly appreciated. RRS 2.7 HSE Stornoway Grey

You realise that if you've got bent valves that you're more than likely going to have to replace the pistons as well ?

And not to be a rain cloud, but you may have been super unlucky and a valve could have broken off, then you could be looking at new piston, liner, turbo and possibly even a new CAT..

After cranking the car have you checked the cam again ? it may be that it just needed to build up oil pressure for the lifters.

By crank I mean turning the engine over (trying to start it).

Rather than stripping the head it would be quicker and cheaper to use a borescope. That way you can check the valves and the pistons without having to pull the engine to bits..
You can take the intake off the turbo, turn it by hand with your finger (nice and smooth is good, rumbly/stiff is bad).

I suspect a replacement head or 2 heads will be the easiest way to go.

£100 each (off ebay) second hand.
