Tax cars with higher emissions, fine... whatever they want to do. What annoys me is the fact that this is all being couched as an anti-4x4 tax. When will they get to acknowledge that 4x4s are actually in the minority of high emission vehicles. They don't say "this tax is likely to hit drivers of sports cars and high-end luxury saloons" do they? The witch hunt continues...

I feel the same way. After all, i bought a second hand car. The amount of CO2 that goes into a newbuild must be significant yet i'll not get a tax break on that. I will offset the emissions from my car as I do believe in global warming. For those that want to offset though, why isn't there a petrol brand that costs more, that offsets the CO2 emmissions? Then how will the government justify the taxes then? 2022 P440e AB |

Behind you 100% with this one Wokkaman. It is one of the reasons I left the armed forces way back. Although it is difficult to believe, Maggie Thatcher was the last PM to give the armed forces a big pay rise. She managed to bring armed forces pay into line with the national average back in 1979. Since then they have been slowly falling behind again. I was disgusted to realise a few months ago that some one serving burgers in McDonalds will earn more in twelve months than one of "our boys & girls" in the armed forces. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. This couldn't work on anything other than emissions could it? I mean the DVLA don't even track 4x4 status of a vehicle, my D2 is just an "estate". So I think this will be actually just a hike to the emissions-related road tax bands....which will catch lots of other stuff as GB won't be able to resist it applying to much more than just the obvious... Yeah, it will likely be based upon emmissions as it currently is. Just a price change. My tax is up next month. , can I extend early?[/quote] Mine too - you can retax online from the 15th of the preceeding month so we could get a disc to run from 1/4/07 at the current rate, worst is you would lose a month at the current rate (£17.50) as you wouldn't get it refunded - seems worth doing no? Got to also be worth changing the renewal date to just prior to the budget to postpone the increase for a year in budgets to come???? I think they will probably put the higher tax on new vehicles only. Car registered before say 1/4/07 will still pay the normal rates. Trying to implement this on all cars in the higher band would cause a huge protest as there is nothing owners could do about it especially people who use 4x4 in work, the 2nd hand market would suffer and the government would have to wright off £millions in company tax income. My guess is that any car bought after 13rd March will be hit with a higher tax so reducing the public protest. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
