"Budget to Tax Gas Guzzlers"

http://www.itv.com/news/britain_4d81321c6d...7faad.html

When will the government make sense?

A) A £400 car tax is not going to stop us buying these cars. Looks like it will affect "most 4 x 4's".

B) The public perceive it as cynical tax raising ploy if the funds aren't used to pay for something green such as carbon sequestartion tech or offshore windfarms etc.

Only upside I can think of is that it might make a LPG conversion pay for itself faster than before though. 2022 P440e AB

Tax cars with higher emissions, fine... whatever they want to do. What annoys me is the fact that this is all being couched as an anti-4x4 tax. When will they get to acknowledge that 4x4s are actually in the minority of high emission vehicles. They don't say "this tax is likely to hit drivers of sports cars and high-end luxury saloons" do they? The witch hunt continues... Evil or Very Mad

The thing that really annoys me about this and the all the bad press given to so called Gas Guzzling 4x4's is that it gives an OK sign for anyone wanting to run a key down the side of my car as it is seen to be antisocial.
I dont drive my 4x4 that offen to polute the world but I work hard and pay enough tax as it is.
I am very getting fed up with this government telling me what to eat, drink, drive and where and how to go on holiday. How long will it be before I am told I should not be living in a four bedroom house as there are only two of you!

If I were younger I would seriously be thinking of leaving this once great country.

I am sure Mr Brown has counted the beans to see what effect it would have if he were to tax everyone into smaller cars using less fuel and therefore paying less fuel tax!

If it takes a £1000 a year road tax to wipe the smerk of Browns face when he loses the election I will be very happy to pay it.

I feel the same way. After all, i bought a second hand car. The amount of CO2 that goes into a newbuild must be significant yet i'll not get a tax break on that.

I will offset the emissions from my car as I do believe in global warming. For those that want to offset though, why isn't there a petrol brand that costs more, that offsets the CO2 emmissions? Then how will the government justify the taxes then? 2022 P440e AB

I have to say I am not totally 100% convinced about global warming.
I wish I could time travel to see if in 100 years time they are all laughing at us as we sacrificed our pleasures in aid of a false understanding.
After all they once thought the world was flat!!

I would also be happy to 'off set' my CO2 emmissions but the current way of taxing is not actually going anywhere apart from into Browns coffers.

Are we saving the world alone whilst the USA, China etc enjoy their lives?

Behind you 100% with this one Wokkaman. It is one of the reasons I left the armed forces way back.

Although it is difficult to believe, Maggie Thatcher was the last PM to give the armed forces a big pay rise. She managed to bring armed forces pay into line with the national average back in 1979. Since then they have been slowly falling behind again.

I was disgusted to realise a few months ago that some one serving burgers in McDonalds will earn more in twelve months than one of "our boys & girls" in the armed forces. This couldn't work on anything other than emissions could it? I mean the DVLA don't even track 4x4 status of a vehicle, my D2 is just an "estate". So I think this will be actually just a hike to the emissions-related road tax bands....which will catch lots of other stuff as GB won't be able to resist it applying to much more than just the obvious... Cheers

Good point VA - I predict the USA will soon bring in something protectionist like that in the name of climate change..... Cheers

Yeah, it will likely be based upon emmissions as it currently is. Just a price change. My tax is up next month. Censored , can I extend early? 2022 P440e AB

Mine too - you can retax online from the 15th of the preceeding month so we could get a disc to run from 1/4/07 at the current rate, worst is you would lose a month at the current rate (£17.50) as you wouldn't get it refunded - seems worth doing no? Got to also be worth changing the renewal date to just prior to the budget to postpone the increase for a year in budgets to come???? Cheers

I think they will probably put the higher tax on new vehicles only. Car registered before say 1/4/07 will still pay the normal rates. Trying to implement this on all cars in the higher band would cause a huge protest as there is nothing owners could do about it especially people who use 4x4 in work, the 2nd hand market would suffer and the government would have to wright off £millions in company tax income. My guess is that any car bought after 13rd March will be hit with a higher tax so reducing the public protest. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
