Just worked out that if we ALL carbon offset then they'll have to look for an area the size of Brazil to re-forest, infact the only area that would suit IS Brazil. Anyone think the Brazilians would ahve something to say about that??? Very Happy

Well someone's globally got to be in the stone-age Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

So if they'd not logged it we'd be ok then? Whistle Laughing

All RRS owners or Uk cars in general??

??

Not quite understanding your question mark there. When you say "we" who are you talking about? Do mean the whole World's cars, UK or just rrs drivers?? Think your sums may be slightly out whatever.......

Evenin chaps...just got home and read this topic in the paper this morning.

I'm going to send an infuriatingly stonkly horrible e-mail to browny about this and was it VA that said? if he were younger he'd move? Well whoever I've decided I'm going to move from this taxing country.Quite frankly despite myself not paying much tax so far in my life I still dont like it.
Prices are too high, standard of living for what its worth isnt fantastic if you may be a mediocre earner and quite frankly its the middle classes that get hit the most.
The poor get poorer and the rich get richer and the people in the middle pay for everything.

I dont believe in global warming and quite frankly i'm likely to move to either Canada or Mid/Far East and I'm going to drive a big "gas guzzling" supercharged range rover, I'm going to want a car that has a 9 billion litre engine Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Grrrrr...damn that man. If I'm still here when the next elections come I'm definately not voting labour. Michael Potter

"So if they'd not logged it we'd be ok then?"

From the point of view of absorbing Co2:
Actively growing trees absorb much more Co2 than established "old growth "
So it is better to harvest the forests than to leave them alone PROVIDED.....
i) The process is staged and managed to protect as much wildlife as possible.
ii) The harvested timber is value added as much as possible so as to maximise the benefit for the owners(in most
cases a local community
and most importantly
iii) The area is successfully re established with an equivalent MIX of species so as to encourage continuation of the cycle.
Of course this is not suitable for the aesthetics who would rather continue the fantasy that looking at a wonderful resource is better than managing it.
Having said that I would agree that there are many areas of forest in the world that should be preserved and there are all sorts of reasons for this.
Landrover (and others) are showing a corporate awareness of this situation but we as owners are getting no kudos for supporting them. Twisted Evilend of rant.

I have just turned down having my downstairs floors covered in "rain-forest wood" despite that it was half the price of my using "pear wood". I turned it down on environmental grounds and it turned out that it was half price due to the fact that everyone else over here is doing the same.

As for the car being a gas guzzler (I have a tdv6 diesel). I am managing around 28mpg (and that includes autobahn driving) and am having the new particle filter fitted.

Fortunately, the new government over here and the people are not as reactionary as the Brits so they take everything into consideration: (mpg/Lp100km, what type of filter you have, etc etc) before they jump on the bandwagon and label you sperm of the devil just because you drive a 4wd.

Case in point is that my friend has ordered the new M3 coupe and he fully appreciates (as does the public over here) that his vehicle produces more greenhouse gases than mine, produces less mpg than mine and uses a more highly refined fuel than mine. It just seems that the populous in the UK equate 4wd as evil whilst forgetting that there are many vehicles on the road that are far more polluting! Surprised

Point Missed....

....why has no-one pointed out that 50,000 miles per annum in any rep special vehicle produces far more CO2 than, say, 10,000 miles per annum in a "4x4" ?? Adding in to the cost of collecting and administering road tax, producing disks, etc., why tax vehicles in this way at all? I'd advocate putting a bit more on fuel (if really necessary) and abolishing road tax altogether.

Advantage - "Pay as you go" tax, people have a chioce, and may go some way towards discouraging vehicle use, rather than vehicle choice, i.e. the "green" stance is preserved

(and don't mention the old-fashioned "this provides an opportunity for Insurance and MNOT checks as they're all on-line and this arguement is now obsolete)....

Just my 2p worth Thumbs Up

I can live with that Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing
I too drive a diesel for two reasons
i) I need the range provided in a tank (anything over 700Km is OK and this is easy for my RRS)
ii) I have an inbuilt abhorrence of paying any more to the system for my fuel than I have to.
Furthermore I enjoy driving my Sport especially the bit where I waft past the hybrids with their drivers hunched over the wheel so they can look out the top of the windscreens to see which part of the sky is going to fall on them.
It does no harm that my 'dust to dust' carbon imprint is less than theirs....but they don't care.
SWMBO will not walk with me when I wear my new 'T' shirt which says on the front:
'God invented hybrid cars'
and on the back'To keep w*nkers out of Range Rover Sports" Laughing

Yep, I agree with you totally. Actually have a look at what the Prius production causes, and this is only one of their suppliers!!!

So, next time a bearded, bespectacled, Arran jumper wearing-beardy berates you about your choice of vehicle, bend him over, roll up you print out of the linked article, insert it into his orifice and point out that his wife should wear make-up, visit the dentist, wear something other than dungarees and that his kids need physcological help to undo the damage that his enforced lentil eating and ban-the-bomb lifestyle have inflicted upon them.

Censored , the lot of them Very Happy
