I Am Excited!

So having been searching for a while I think I have found ‘the one’ and potentially when the dealer opens later this morning I shall be placing my reservation fee with a view to collecting Friday fingers crossed.

It’s a big purchase for me, I have wanted one ever since they first came out, but up until now circumstances haven’t been quite right. I have owned a 2010 X5 and a 2008 ML, both of which were great in their own respect but still the RRS has eluded me.

Heading towards the winter and living in a Somerset village which is prone to localised flooding and uncleared roads if it snows, the safety and security I felt when I owned both the X5 and ML has been missing for sometime. Of course I worry whether I can ‘afford’ a RRS and reading horror stories of big bills and terminal failures on here doesn’t help but then like a lot of people say forums are here to help people with problems and issues and it’s not often you get threads about how reliable and trouble free their car has been.

I was quite strict with my requirements in terms of age, colour, mileage and have ended up finding what looks to be a great 3 owner example for sale at a Land , Rover Specialist. It will have a full cambelt service, rear arms/bushes which flagged on last MOT along with EPB service and 4 wheel alignment. Having read a number of suggested works to allow people to enjoy their RRS, I think that has most of it covered.

The exception to this would be brake/ARC pipes which I will need to try my best and inspect when viewing/collecting. It will obviously come with warranty, this will be provided by AA I believe and available to extend. Having asked on a specific thread it seems the AA aren’t renowned for paying out so may take the included warranty and then look to apply another one when it expires.

So it’s an exciting week really! Hopefully by this time next week I could have ticked a box which has long been left unticked, any words of wisdom/encouragement or otherwise are welcomed!!!!!!

Si

Exciting times for you indeed, Si, keep us posted!
Sounds like you have done you homework at least, and the warranty is a very good call. My RRS came from Marshall in Peterborough with 12 month warranty and I've renewed it every year (£349 a year, never increased). Had a couple of claims, and the amount paid out is roughly what I've paid for the warranty- but you never know, so will keep it going Wink You can't see the eyes of the demon until him come callin'

Welcome Si. When you do your test drive, make sure to listen out for any knocks from the front end when turning or braking. The front lower arm bushes and ARB bushes are also prone to wearing out quickly. If you can get these done by the dealer before you buy, then that would be good.

Also, it may be worth doing all of your fluids and filters. Air and cabin filters, fuel filter, engine oil and filter, front and rear diff oils, gearbox fluid, hydraulic ARB fluid and filter, power steering fluid and brake fluid.

I've done all of these over the course of the past year on mine. They are easy enough to do on your driveway and it gives a good feeling that she's running on nice clean fluids.

The best advice though is.....just enjoy it. Kev

I can honestly recommend Warranty Direct. Their policies are priced based in age and mileage, so depending on your circumstances affordability varies. I’ve never had a problem claiming. ( And you will claim!) If I had self-insured I would have broken even. But then I would not have had cover for the catastrophic loss risk, of a turbo or gearbox or whatever. Money well spent for me.

My only other advise is to handle issues head on without delay. Don’t let things fester. I’ve owned mine since new and it’s had issues, but it has never let me down*, and that dependability is what counts for me. If it needs doing, I just get it done. I take it all over Europe and I never worry “will it get me home?” I just assume it will because it always has.

When flying abroad I hire new cars, albeit cars at a lower sticker price new vs a new RRS, but regardless when I get back to Heathrow I always have that ahah feeling as I slide back into the old RRS. I hope the experience is the same for you.

*actually, it did once, the factory supplied battery lasted 4 years only and totally gave up. Home start required. The replacement battery (non-OEM) has lasted 5 years and is still going very strong... L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso
RRS TDV6 HSE Lux (MY2011)... Nara Bronze / Arabica - now gone!

Thanks all for your advice, sadly this one didn’t pan out as I had hoped so still looking for the right one. All good advice taken on board though.

Keep you posted

So it looks like I may have found a suitable replacement, excellent history including full house of clean MOT's without an advisory in its life. The owner is an older gent who bought the car from new and has replaced it with a brand new RRS, the car appears to have been maintained regardless of cost.

In terms of a RRS its a little unusual in several respects which initially I wasn't sure if I liked, however I have now gone full circle and these specific items really appeal.

I will of course keep you posted and update this thread if all goes to plan.

Hi Keith,

I wondered if this might generate some curiosity - it’s nothing massive but in a sea of black/grey RRS’s for sale it’s a fairly unusual colour which I really like and think it suits the car. Secondly nearly every RRS I have looked at has been fitted with privacy glass, this particular car isn’t and I think (specific to this car) it looks better for it.

I am super pleased and having just got up from sleeping after a night shift have received a message from the buyer with a photo of every invoice in the cars life and most importantly last year a full invoice for a full belt service which is music to my ears!!!

Watch this space.....

Si

Umm rarest colours - Barolo Red, Bourneville, Chawton White, Atacama Sand and Zanzibar closely followed by Siberian Silver. However to be almost exclusive it has to be Vesuvius Orange because only 300 were built in that colour. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Mine is Barossa, which is a metallic purple. Never ever seen another. Took a gamble when I specified it as you don't really see anything on the dealer colour charts. Glad I did as the metallic really sparkles on a sunny day. From a distance it looks black. Picture does not do it justice

That looks lovely it really like that colour! Fair play for choosing it, I bet it changes in the different lights.

Nice!

Wow ok so it’s none of those either, so maybe it’s not an unusual colour. The only reason I said it was as since I was looking for one I probably saw 3 in this particular colour I reckon. It’s not to everyone’s taste but I really like it and think it adds to the timelessness of the car.

It’s all looking good for a Friday so will let you know how it all goes!
