England 2012 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Autobiography Fuji White

I have the VPLSV0065 kit fitted and it doesn’t need any CCF edits, it’s a standalone kit with an input from the sidelight pos wire on the RHS headlamp. I’ve also got the mod done for the fairy lights as DRL which actually turns off my proper LR DRL kit. What I intend to do next is remove the DRL off signal wire from the sidelight and connect it to the main beam pos wire so that the DRL switches off when the mains come on leaving the fairy lights and DRLs on together. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Firenze Red

Afternoon!

So this thread stalled a little, partly because of some unpredictable work commitments and partly because the seller was messed about by another interested party. However the RRS is still available and I am still very keen to purchase it, all things being equal, a visit has been booked for tomorrow to view, drive and hopefully purchase it!

Couple of things regarding the view/drive bit, looking around on the forum there are a number of things to look for and a number of things that could present themselves on the test drive. Remembering this is a 1 owner (old chap) car with a full LR specialist service history, annual oil changes and not 1 advisory on any of its MOT’s - I am not expecting a dog!

The terrain response - this should be tested by selecting each mode and ensuring it engages each one without fuss, drama or messages on the dash?
The air suspension - this should be checked by selecting off road height and then switching engine off to ensure it maintains the level, then reducing this down to access height to ensure it drops smoothly and equally before driving off at access height to ensure it automatically raises?
Bushes/arms - will make themselves known whilst turning at low speed on full lock?
Transmission - should be accelerated hard from rolling speed to ensure smooth kick down and no ‘thunk’ type noise, also read about doing this on an uphill?

Other than that it appeases business as usual, check all electrics work, bodywork and underneath for damage, service history, etc etc.

If there is anything glaring I have missed please let me know.

And as before watch this space.......

Si

Before you start testing the TR programs you will have to engage the low ratio gearbox and if it has been properly looked after you will hear a quiet noise as the transfer box works, then the LR light will come. It isn’t the end of the world if it doesn’t go into low box but it should engage quietly and smoothly and you are buying a car where it is part of the tools to facilitate off-road driving so it should be working. Not a reason to walk away as the fix isn’t too horrendous but it is a negotiating point - apart from that you would have to take it into the right conditions to test it. The programs are basically ECU remaps adjusting throttle, gear change and suspension settings electronically. I doubt the seller would be happy for you to take his pristine car that has only been off-road as far as the golf club car park into a field! Do you intend to go iffroad after you have bought it? If not then the only TR setting you are likely to need to use will be Grass Gravel and Snow if we get a lot of snow, but proper tyres will also help in that respect even without using the TR settings. Might be worth going on a Land Rover Experience course before trying that though. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thank you Tim, that’s really useful in terms of the TR system, your quite right it probably won’t be used a huge amount with the exception of snow although I may venture on a LR Experience day and a green lane trip on Salisbury Plain at some point but it won’t be regular and gentle compared to some of what I have seems.

Good to know that’s not a huge concern though so thank you 👍

It used to say (I haven’t had an RRS now for 15 months so cannot check) in the owner’s handbook that the transfer mechanism should be operated monthly even if you never intend to use it in earnest, to keep all moving bits freed up. Also when checking that the suspension is working properly please show it some sympathy and do it with the car moving, even if you do it at a crawl. Yes you can do it when stopped But it is better if the car is moving, especially if you are going up to off-road height then straight down to access height
BTW, it isn’t necessary to have Terrain Response to take the car off road - operational transfer/ low ratios and working air suspension are all you need in the RRS and all of its modern sisters. My 1996 Defender has a transfer case/ low ratios, that’s it, no HDC, no TR, no traction control and no ABS or airbags! It goes places I wouldn’t take an recently purchased RRS even though a modern Land Rover product will do it with ease, the thought of doing expensive body/underside damage does temper where you want to take one! Take a look in the Offroad section of the forum and you will see just how capable the cars are even unmodified. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Hmm .. I didn't operate the low ratio box in any of my test drives. I don't know if I'm too scared to do it now, given that I've owned it for six months! Laughing

BTW, Tim, out of interest - what's a CSW (your signature re your Defender)? 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

This didn’t turn out to be the car for me so the search continues, I have put a wanted post up in case anyone is thinking of selling or indeed if you know of a particular car that is up for sale.

Keep you posted on how I go.

I think this lengthy quest has come to a conclusion, a week tomorrow and I very much hope to purchase my first RRS! I have wanted one ever since they first came out, watched the Top Gear feature with JC racing a Supercharged one whilst being chased by a tank, lucky enough to drive a 2011 for a weekend for a friends wedding and tried to buy one on several occasions; so it’s been a long time coming.

This time I am extremely confident that the car I am travelling to view will fit the bill to a tee and I am very much looking forward to it becoming part of the family, and heading feet first into winter it couldn’t come at a better time!

CSW = County Station Wagon, in the days of Tdi300 and TD5 engined Defenders the County was the Autobigraphy of the Defender Range - the extras included a fabric headliner, Alipne windows over the rear cabin, a radio/ cassette player, alloy wheels, fancy cloth/ fabric as opposed to plastic covered seat and huge transfers down each side! Mine was originally a CHT.......... County Hard Top (Hard top was LR speak for a van!)

My transfers are getting a bit faded but they are 23 years old and I have a replacement set waiting for the time to be put on 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

WHAT A DAY!

So yesterday was viewing/collection day, having exchanged numerous emails back and forth with iLard coupled with the very detailed and honest ad he had written, that one visit was entirely safe. iLard lives in a beautiful part of London and I live in Somerset so two trains and three tubes later I was walking along a leafy suburb expecting a glimpse of the car when it promptly came into sight; sat squat in access height and exuding class.

I met with iLard who was the perfect seller, someone who enthused about every detail on the car and was happy to explain and demonstrate everything. As mentioned on the For Sale thread the colour combo looks sensational in the flesh and was the perfect combo of light and dark.

A lengthy test drive later confirmed that this felt every bit a new car as the day he drove it out the showroom, taught, compliant, whisper quiet and oh so comfortable!

The deal was confirmed, money transferred, V5 done and before long I was pairing my phone to the Bluetooth and adjusting my seat for the drive home. The first stretch out of London and on the M4 was spent in what seemed like a never ending 50mph speed limit, it was a great opportunity to test the radar cruise control - unnerving at first praying that when the car slowed down in front so to would my car!! But it did and I soon got used to it although found to my peril that when catching up a slower moving vehicle in lane 1, indicating to move out into lane 2, it would slam on the brakes as you moved across into the faster moving lane having already picked up the slower moving car Rolling Eyes lol!

A stop for some food and a coffee at Reading services and we were soon on the home stretch, the journey was spent discussing what an incredible vehicle the RRS was, my friend who travelled with me is very much a lightweight sports car man (VX220, Lotus Evora, Alfa 4C) but even he got out at the end and said ‘I might think about getting my wife one of these!’ which is complimentary indeed.

When I got home it was getting late, my daughter asleep in bed and my wife in her pj’s watching tv so no quick run out for them last night, however when I got up for work this morning at 05.00hrs a bleary eyed little girl came down the stairs and said ‘Dad can I sit in the new car?!?’ a little wave of excitement in her voice.

It was a great day and it’s been a long time coming, iLard was a gent and a really genuine person who could have probably talked all afternoon about all things LR so thank you to him! Now it’s time for me to enjoy the RRS and put it to use, will get a thread up to document the journey.

Thanks to all Thumbs Up

Si
