Reidi, Recommending the fluid changes because it's likely that many of these haven't been done at all. The diffs fail prematurely due to a manufacturing fault. My front diff failed at 35k miles; changing the oil and updating the breather might save yours. LR say the gearbox oil is 'lifetime fill' but even ZF don't agree anymore and recommend ATF change at 60k and specialists say change it at 35k intervals. The engine oil is critical for our TDV8s and any sludge build up could cause catastrophic failure without warning. The way dealer's do it i.e. without warming up the engine, just sucking old oil out of the dipstick hole and using whatever spec oil they can buy cheaply is criminally negligent IMHO. Get the engine properly warm drain it by removing both sump plugs and refill with the highest recommended spec oil and use a LR oil filter and you will improve the longevity of your engine. If you search the forum you'll find a 'how to' posts on the diff breather update and MAP and MAF sensor cleaning. If you are really not the DIY type then buy the correct fluids yourself and try to find an old school type independent LR specialist to do the changes for you. Your handbook has details on the correct tyre specification and if the tyres fitted aren't the right spec I would insist the dealer you bought it from changes at their expense as they are not fit for purpose. The law is on your side. The load rating is vital for such a heavy car and must be 106Y or above. As others have already said the burning smell is probably your Fuel Burning Heater (FBH) kicking in. Smells like an old paraffin stove and the little snowflake shows up on the dash next to the outside temp. Be grateful it works - they can be a PIA. All the above might sound a bit OCD but hey - that's what forums are all about isn't it? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE |

Sagitar are a Chinese tyre and the P607 appears to be available in 275/45/20 (http://sagitartyre.com/tools_info.asp?keyno=116). Check your tyres and see what size they are. If they're 275/45 then go back to the dealer and make them put the correct size on - 275/40. The minimum load rating is 106. It looks like they've put on the cheapest tyres they can find and I wouldn't be happy about that if it was my money. The front diff failure was, I believe, caused by an issue with the paint used on the inside to protect the metal. It would flake off and cause problems. I recently had my gearbox fluid changed by an indie. Total price incl VAT was £190.00 (£38/hr labour rate helped!). I'd hate to think what a LR dealer would charge for the same service but their fluid is twice the price for a start and their hourly rate is c.£100. That was done as a precaution at 65k miles. My aim is to have it done every 2 years from now on I think. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

Apparently so and in addition the original breather is said to melt and stop breathing so pressurising the diff, forcing oil out through the oil seals which leads to premature bearing failure. See Kev's post on changing the breather http://rrsport.co.uk/forum/post377031.html#377031 - the new one looks different (see pics in the post) so easily identified by just looking under the bonnet. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE |

Have had this happen twice and the final time the diff bearings failed. So four duffs in five years. The breather and seal repair is ok as long as the diff hasn't run too low on oil, mine had so 10 months after the seal and breather was changed the bearings failed. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

Don't take chances with diffs. I had a rear diff failure within 6000 miles from new. Rear diff problems start with vibration whic can be mistaken for front wheel balance. LR replaced 4 wheels, 4 tyres and 2 steering racks before the rear diff was replaced which cured the problem.

You posting on here doesn't bother me in all honestly, because I tend to scroll straight past your posts on here, I've only taken the time out to read this one as I knew you wouldn't be able to help yourself to a reply. You've been here longer than me for sure, congratulations on that. I'll go back to my usual style of browsing and not posting so much, I'm sure you'll continue with your usual charm. Hes not been around that long and of his 900 posts, 889 of them are probably a waste of time. meaning since 2008 he has probably posted 11 useful, un-offensive or helpful posts...not a great record.

The differential paint issue was identified by LR in an SSM apparently:
Check your VIN against this to see if you might be susceptible. LR don't appear interested enough in it to make it something that dealers should sort so it's presumably been left as a time bomb for owners to deal with. My VIN is later than the one quoted in the SSM so I'm hoping mine isn't affected. I might get the diff fluids changed soon at the next service though as it doesn't appear to be a costly thing to have done. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

I have been here since 2006 and didn't post much but often read without responding. Of late I have used my experience to attempt to help others while all I see and read in your particular case, is crap aimed at getting a rise out of folk. I think I speak for most on here, and state that we are really not interested in people who can do little else but insult and ridicule while trying to be the Big I Am. If you have nothing constructive to say, say nothing as otherwise it won't be long before you will be placed in the second category by public vote and banning your sorry ar5e. Play nice or find another play area who might appreciate your humour more 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀 TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
