Yes I'm sure that's it so it's a turbo pipe, ok, in that case I can probably do what you and others did to get the 2 bottom bolts.

Is there a bracket of some kind holding the alt on at the front near the tensioner that has to be loosened to get the alt out.

Alternator has a horizontal bolt going in from the front, access from the top, and two vertical bolts accessed from below. Don’t remember a bracket, but if it was obvious/easy I may have forgotten about it.

You'll see above i did and what they said

I also got the RAC out tonight mainly to see if they would offer their mobile mech to fix it. Said no it'd need to go to a garage but also said the power steering pulley's loose and that's what's broke the alt belt and put the light on.

Thing is, I looked at a few engine photos and the steering pump's on the opposite side. I then thought it was the water pump but no.
This is a pulley not directly under the alt but dam near. There's 2 belts on mine, one goes round the alt, tensioner, crank then this other thing. The other longer one goes round the fan, crank, p/ steering and an idler.

So what Mr rac said is the steering pump no its not. He also said why don't you if you've got a new one (belt) put it on just to see if the alt is ok but said I'm sure i remember seeing and smelling smoke.

I honestly don't know what the hell to do with this thing. I like it but it lasted 1 week 1 bloody week then this crap. But the main thing really pi55in me off is the tax is 770 (paying up).

There’s an ACE suspension pump near the alternator.
If that’s faulty, then giving up is best. Expensive

You're right I'm sure that's what it is, Mr RAC obviously hadn't heard or didn't about it. I googled it a bit a see some bypass it but can cause problems.
Don't know what to do now.

Just a Censored that I've got a new alt and belt and even if I did get them on, with the ace pulley being loose would the pump blow up/ break.

I find it hard to believe that a loose pulley would shredand break the belt but maybe it did. But then I smelt burning the night it happened and sure it was the alt hence the battery light on.

I priced some pumps and yes quite pricey then if pipes are rusted and corroded..... what a bloody carry on right enough.

So this time do i fix (or try) out cut my losses big time and get rid.

I see Jonny hasn't answered yet about if i phoned the place in glasgow, or maybe he's no answer too as i think he was sure they'd fit mine, wrong Very Happy

I phoned another couple of garages today and most said no, and like RR Glasgow the ones that said yes also won't unless they supply it therefore I'd be stuck with mine.

Do i regret doing the deal with my old C class for this thing.... bloody right.

Did the belt break?

Maybe you need to swallow the cost of the alternator. Keep as spare.
Or sell if your confident it’s not going to fail again

Yes but don't know if it was because the ace pulley's loose or a worn/ maybe sticky alt pulley. My guessing is maybe it being loose has been biting into it.
But I know i still smelt burning so probably coming from the alt. So there we have it, New alt, belt and probably ace pump unless it's bypassed which according to what I've read so far isn't a good idea.

Yes, and If you take it to an independent specialist garage, they can do a proper inspection and tell you want it required.

If the pulley is damaged, maybe get them to fit a working alternator so you can drive it home. May need to sign a disclaimer that something wont last long

A garage will only fit new that they supply. I might (weather permitting) try and get the new belt on for the hell of it just to see what happens and if the alt starts smoking etc again then it's it's getting to get the new one one.

But it's the ace pump now too, I honestly don't know whether to keep and (try) and fix or sell for junk.
