What a total

B@#£%^d of a job trying to do an alternator on a old 09 sport 3.6, I still haven't did it and don't think I will. Can't get the bloody fan off because I can't "hold" the water pump then didn't have a38mm spanner plus can't get the turbo pipe/s off at the alt bolts.

This kind of crap is meant for a garage not some asshole in a drive outside with limited tools.

yeah, its nasty if the fan hasn't been off in a white

leave the belt on.
get the 2 tools. One to hold pulley, and the spanner.
Then give it a sharp knock with a lump hammer

Can't do that as there's more pipes in front of it, also don't have a 38mil.

I think it'll be sold for spares etc I'm just not in the frame of mind at all to do stuff like this, shouldn't have started it I'm just kidding myself. I honestly think I'm done "working" on cars enough's enough.

I reckon £300 at a garage. What do you want for the car ?

I’ll give you £1,000 scrap value as is, spend £300 and then have a car worth £5k.

Your call

I think you’re missing the point. I’m trying to be helpful and saying that you’re not doing yourself a favour by scrapping the car when you can fix it for £300 or so.

There’s plenty of people on here who are trying to help - you just seem to see it as a place to vent your frustrations without actually listening to advice.

My final thoughts are that if you get it to a garage, they can fix it for not a lot in the scheme of things.

Alternatively, scrap it, get £1000 in return and go and buy your Merc back.

Nobody wants to do it apart from one and they're busy till Feb

The only "advice" I got above was use 2 tools and I already said I didn't have a 38mm.... yes I can buy one but its an fkr of a job hence nobody will do it.

And at over 100 views I think they know too is a b@#£%^d of a job for something like a bloody alternator. Surety they could have put it somewhere easier.

Hi, I've been reading a lot lately regarding changing an alternator on a rrs tdv8.

I found the following guide, the guy said that he was told you don't need to remove the fan to get to the tensioner.

Here's the link

https://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/post527455.html

Hope it helps

Thanks for the link yes I've read that before, it's mainly me, I'm just not in the right frame of mind and don't have the right tools.

Yes, it's does make a big difference. The trouble is the older we get, the more we can't be asked.

I've been restoring a Triumph Stag for the past five years. It's nearly there but I'm spending less time on it. Next year I need to really push myself, get a bit fitter and crack on with all the jobs that need doing. That includes the cars and the house.

All the best

Did mine last year,, maybe I was lucky but the fan came off quite easily, didn't use any special tools,, I know I used a 12" pipe wrench and can't remember what else. Hardest part was getting the 2 bottom bolts back in,, I found that taking off the bottom intercooler hose then pulling the pipe down and tying off gives another 15mm clearance to play with,,, makes a huge difference. It is awkward but a little perseverance will get it sorted. 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!
Many years ago,,,,, 1955 series 1 landie , sometimes wish I had kept it

Yes I'm finding I can't be bothered doing a lot of stuff now even simple things, I've got to push myself.
It's mainly because now I've no garage to hide in.

I managed to get the right spanner for it ie 32/36mm and got the fan loosened. This is a love hate with this bloody car.
Yes these bottom bolts were a bad I managed to move the metal and rubber pipe just a smidge out the way, so bad though.

I've still not got it fitted yet though between work and looking after a mother with the start of either dementia or alzheimers hence not in the right frame of mind plus working outside.
