RRS 2006 - loud metal banging when braking - missing bolt

hi all,

I just purchased a RRS 2006 via private sale in australia.

The pre-sale inspection identified that the front brakes needed replacement so the seller got her mechanic to replace. The car subsequently passed the Road Worthy Inspection (MOT in UK).

Within 20 minutes of purchase, the car started making a very loud banging noise whenever braking (even at very low speed). It sounded like metal on metal

I checked and found the bolt pictured was missing on the front driver's side wheel. I presume the mechanic forgot to install the bolt after he replaced the brakes

A couple of Questions
- Is the black part (identified with the arrow) damaged?
- would there be any other parts damaged? what does this bolt hold together and what parts would move if the bolt was missing?
- should the road worthy inspection / MOT identify a missing bolt?

I want to hold the mechanic & road worthy inspector to account so just need an idea of what other parts to check for damage.

The missing bolt looks like it's one of the one's that bolt the caliper carrier to the stub axle, is the black rubber boot just laid there as it looks like one of the boots from the caliper slider pins, if so then there may well be the slider pin or pin's and screws missing, as not sure ever seen them with what appears to be retaining clips, although that could just be the make of kit used.

thanks Col, (and thanks for sharing the image!)

so are you saying that the caliper bracket (X) will be moving, with the wheel? or would the other part (Y) be moving?

The caliper bracket (X) should be bolted to stub (Y) solid with the missing bolt, the caliper itself should move on the guide/slider pins, which is where the rubber boot appears to have come from by the look of it, although a bigger picture showing more might help.

Those bolts take 275 nm of torque, somebody really screwed up big if one went missing and the other is loose. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
Born and raised in So Cal. Moved to the UK in 2018 for a few years. Now in Poland and looking at moving back to the UK.
