Hi, in June 2016, my RRS 2007 TDV6 had a recon engine fitted by NWS Motor Services at 123,860 miles.
In January 2019 at the annual service (135,204 miles), it was reported to have a oil leak from either oil pump or crankshaft oil seal. This was at Maltings off road Ltd in Doncaster.
I booked it in for 15/02/2019 and duly had the oil seal replaced at a cost of £398.72 inc. vat. They stated that the original oil seal had been pressed in too far?
All was well until i took it back in January 2020 for annual service. They told me all was well but there 'seemed' to bit 'a bit of oil residue' around the crank oil seal but they were not sure if it was a leak or if the mechanic had not cleaned around it when fitted previously. I explained that it should not be leaking 11 months and 1687 miles later?
He told me to keep a eye on it!
As it is not possible to see the seal properly whilst vehicle is on the ground and not been using it, with the present situation giving me some time to spend on car, i removed the metal engine shield from underneath and found the crank seal to be weeping quite badly.
Before i go back to them, have i got any comeback in your opinions?

New pump and seal required. There was a batch of oil pumps leaking from the hex screw in the casing a few years back

Assuming that it's not a cam seal leaking, and the nose of the crank is alright...

Hi Mikey, you have replied to my later post about me having a go at replacing oil seal/pump myself. However, my Indy has clouded the issue a little by suggesting that it would be highly improbable for 2 genuine LR seals to be faulty and his guys have changed hundreds of these with no problems as you would expect from experienced mechanics. He completely ruled out faulty pump but he suggested there were a few possible scenarios with the breather being one and the worst case scenario being a excessive end float in crankshaft 😭. To be honest, if that was the case, I couldn’t justify that spend so I would class it as terminal.
What are your (or anybody’s) thoughts?

If its a Chinese special pump, they have been known to have issues

I'd be inclined to put an OEM/Genuine pump and seal on this time round. If it works, all well and good.
If it doesn't work, then there can only be an issue with the crank sealing surface...

The above obviously assumes that the cam seals are not leaking

Well I got underneath today and removed the 2 steel trays. Fair bit of oil but I am not convinced it is coming from the front crank seal. A bit wet maybe and the hole in the oil pump directly behind the crank pulley showed Signs of oil but not sure if was cleaned up properly after last years seal replacement. It seems to be around the sump area and transmission box although it would as these are the lowest points. I took some pics to see if anybody could offer any advice?

In one pic, the drain hole in the belt cover looks dry, and in another it looks wet

Can you wash the residual oil off, and run the engine with the covers off?

The hole has definitely got some oil in (what does this hole do?) I have wiped it all clean and have left it in air on stands without the guards on so I can leave it running for a bit and check it. The problem is actually seeing where it comes from. I remember spending ages trying to identify a leak 3 years ago and it turned out to be intercooler hose. Could it be rear crank seal?
Mikey, I think you should be relocated to Yorkshire!!!

If you want cheap, go buy yourself a Ford or Citroen-Peugeot oil pump and crank seal. They are originals to this engine.
