do them all hand tight (5Nm) to pull the cam down.

Then go over them again to 10Nm

Yes!

I took the plunge and tried to repair it without pulling the head...

Bought a tool to compress the (broken) spring on the head.

Fitting the spring was no big deal. Removed inlet cam, piston at TDC: valve rested on piston and i was able to compress the spring again without any other tools.

Because the spring was still retracting the valve, but not completly, the valve was only some mm's not closing.

Fitted the new spring and tested with pressurizing the cylinder: now ok! Before air was escaping in the inlet manifold. Next weekend installing the injector rail, injectors etc again. (No time over week...)
