Actually the dirtier the filter the better it filters. The downside is restricted flow. I do filter change now every second oil change since I am now doing intermediate changes. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW. |

As an intermediate oil change, primarily as a precaution against oil dilution, I didn’t believe changing the oil filter would provide any additional benefit.

Very sensible approach, the filter should not need changing for these intermediate, low mileage, oil changes. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

So a new filter is working at its best when new. Taking the viewpoint that as it gets clogged with particles, slowing the flow, and so filtering better is plain wrong.

But the filter will still be contaminated with the old oil and possibly metal fines, surely for sake of a few pounds it makes sense to change the filter at the same time as the oil so you aren’t getting all those contaminants straight into the fresh oil? I was always taught that you change oil and filter at the same time, but with extended service intervals and much better quality oils I haven’t done an intermediate oil on either of my cars in years. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

In years gone by before long service intervals on tractors , the handbooks used to say to change the engine oil every 100hrs and the filter every 200hrs .

But it will still be a better filter than a new one and that is the purpose. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW. |

My point is; that the oil quality is the problem and not that the filter is clogging with engine detritus, I hope and expect that it isn’t. The oil isn’t old either, (4K miles) however it’s performance is expected to have been compromised, due to contamination. What is failing, is the lubricity of the engine oil, due to diesel fuel diluting the oil (they are miscible fluids, both being hydrocarbons) by getting into the sump as a result of a poorly designed diesel particulate filter system. Or more specifically the engine management measures invoked to prevent ithe DPF clogging The filter does its job of removing physical particles above a certain size, and as others have said, it’s filtering performance is initially improved after a short period of operation. Anyhow, tomorrow i’m off for a 2 hour journey towing a caravan, which I hope will also be beneficial to a passive regeneration of the DPF |

I always change the filter if I change the oil regardless of mileage.

I have done an intermediate oil change, sent oil for testing 4% dilution all other specs OK. However my car is now showing oil service ? Is there a way to reset oil service ? M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW. |
