I have no experience with any Nikon, though both systems are excellent.

Few points to keep in mind though:

1- Canon has, by far, the widest selection of lenses among all brands. That's very important both in terms of choices and cost. Have the impression that Nikon lenses cost more for the same quality of Canon, though I could be wrong here (cost wise).

2- Sensor: That's the heart of a digital camera really. Not only Canon make their own but they make the far superior CMOS compared to what Nikon use... Sony's CCD. More details on that if interested.

3- Have a look at any major sporting event, all those white lenses are Canon's Very Happy

Hope I'm not diss'ing Nikon, which I'm not, it's just that Canon has some advantages compared to others. Oh, and you see a lot of photographers migrating to Canon but you rarely see the other way around. I wonder why Wink

Mrs MDP bought a replacement for her old film SLR just over a year ago or so. She stuck with Canon and got herself the EOS 300D Black complete with efs18-55 lens [usm lens] ............ OK so the camera is already way out of date - but at the time it was an excellent entry into the digital slr arena.

One other good bit of advice is check out the weight of the cameras your looking at - they do vary an awful lot!

Another thing is to invest in a decent Compact Flash memory card. I have just bought a couple of 4gb Sandisk Extreme III cards off ebay - brand new - retail packaged & genuine [ registered ok with sandisk ] £45 each.

However I note that sandisk have just released the new Extreme IV [ read/write @ 40mb/s ] , which claims to be twice as fast as the extremeIII..... but at a cost of course.

At this entry level - we have found the camera really easy to use - lighter than its competitors at the time & in its idiot mode is as easy as point & shoot Thumbs Up

Agree with MDP re: the Canon 300D (Digital Rebel.) I have one.

That 300D was revolutionary, it was the first dSLR sub $1000, and won numerous awards. It ushered in a new era in digital photography.

Negative for both. I don't live in the (great) UK nor I'm a pro.

You know your stuff though! I'm about to det the new Nikon D2Xs - always used Nikon but not always happy with them. If canon wanted to corner the market all they need to do is to offer every pro a straight swap for their equipment and Nikon would become an amateur setup! Wouldn't cost much either. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Ha ha VA, Canon doesn't need to do that as it's already happening without any effort from them. So much so that I'm worried about the future market for us photographers. Competition is good for us consumers, and there is no serious competitor for Canon right now (though Nikon guys might disagree on that.)

Excellent choice, though as mentioned earlier I'd wait a couple of weeks to see what Canon will be introducing.

As for accessories, I'd suggest what MDP mentioned, good & decent capacity CF card. One GB Sandisk Ultra II is a good starting point, though I'd recommend 2 GBs. Also, and that's not an expensive item is a USB 2.0 card reader (around $ 20).

Why do you need a card reader? Can you not just plug the camera straight into your USB socket on your PC?
