I need a new EGR valve but have a couple of questions.

I can blank them off and do the software update for you so you don't have the problem ever again. Available tomorrow if you wanted?

If blanking them will it still pass emissions test at MOT?

Yep, will pass the test fine and the EML is dealt with by the software. Due to the software patch, you can only blank both together - and then no more failures. Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Total cost of blanking plus software patch is more or less the same as with getting both EGR valves replaced for a TDV8. I know as I'm in the same position as you, but I would probably go with replacing the EGR valves. Each choice has its own (dis)advantages. |

If it's any consolation, the TDV8 valves give much less problems than the V6's |

Apologies for a slight thread hijack but people keep going on about blanking TDV8 EGRs but despite hunting high and low and reading numerous posts on different forums I have yet to find a blanking kit for a TDV8 - so what's the answer? Do you just use the same blanking kits as for a TDV6? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

@Paddi, no it isn't the same kit hence the slightly higher cost. BAS is selling the kit and the software patch if you're interested with positive results.

Ah OK thanks - the kits not listed on BAS website so I need to ring them? The EGR patch via IID tool is listed though. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE |

Yep, bad software patches are everywhere, hence it's strongly recommended to use trusted LR specialists like BAS and Alive.
I think it's safe to say that this is not good for the engine. TBH, such effects are well accepted to be true, but regulation means manufacturers have no choice so it just goes ahead. When you consider the great effort that goes into perfecting fine tolerances in an engine, I don't think there's any engineer in the world that thinks it wouldn't cause harm.
I don't disagree that consideration for the environment should be given as to EGR blanking, however, the arguments don't stack up because EGRs also cause a great increase in particulate matter which is the number one pollutant as regards health with a more significant effect than the NOx reduced. On a vehicle without a DPF there is all the more concern therefore. They also give an opportunity for the turbo(s) to overspeed. Aside from that, they simply aren't as effective in the real world as figures suggest and there can be genuine risk to life when they fail. While some valves manage to last a long while, the TDV6, ones for instance, are thought to have an average life much shorter than that, of perhaps 30-40k. ok this is very interesting. I looked at my egr valves and can see on top of the valve a small plate with two bolts,, is this whey get blanked off from can anyone tell me
