Roof running strips

Hi all I am new to the group and new to owning a RRS, I purchased a 2006 Supercharged on Saturday, so far so good with it all seems ok. When I bought the car it had Land Rover roof bars fitted which I will
Use at some point when I start on my bike again just not yet so I would like to remove them and the rails they slide in to, my problem is when I unscrewed the 3 T30 screws and removed the black plastic running strips that run full length of the roof have had holes drilled in them to get to the threaded fixings underneath whilst still retaining the strips, as I want to remove rails I would rather not have these holes in them and not just that they seem a little loose and I am worried they may get blown off. Does anybody know a fix or where to buy these strips from or is a trip to the stealers? Any and all help will be much appreciated Thumbs Up thanks Simon

I think they are not designed to take off once they are fitted.....
I'd talk to your LR dealer.....talk costs little...? Thumbs Up

The cover strips are available from dealers. I replaced them on a FL2 when I removed the roof rails to fit on replacement Thumbs Up

The rails are very low profile on RRS so why not remove bars and just leave rails in place Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

The Weatherstrips as L/R call them are about £60 each with vat. Dan at Duckworth's can probably do better.

The problem with the Original one's will be that to fit genuine L/R Roof Rail you need to drill the three hole in the weatherstrip larger, so if you remove the rails the plastic "Fir Trees" will no longer secure the original weatherstrip as they are to small for the holes.

You could buy more of the actual retaining clips that secure the strip as from the factory they are only fitted one each end of the weatherstrip and rely on the "Fir Trees" to do the rest, however you can fit five or six clips per strip to clip them in place and just blank the three hole of with some rubber grommets.

The easiest solution would be to leave the rails in place and just remove the cross bars.

Cheers
Col

Thanks for the replies Thumbs Up previous owner had lost the keys to the roof rails so I had to remove the lot in one go and was left with these 3 holes each side. However I have now discovered a code on the locks and ordered the nesseccery key to fit and will be removing the cross bars, not too sure how it will look with just the side runners in place but as said they dont stand too high so maybe not that noticible once the bars have been removed. Thanks again for the replies

Cheers Col that looks ok they don't stand out too much at all. Nice motor by the way those are the wheels I want in 22" along with either the HST or the Autobiography kit. I have already booked in for some exhaust modifications on mine and I am looking at the mudtech 4x4 kit also.

Hi Mate, My weather strips are the original ones fitted to the RRS and has black grommits in the holes from the factory. i removed one recently to have a look and they push directly into the bolt holes in the roof. Apparently some RRs had the holes from new and other had to drill the holes in order to fit their roof rails etc.

Hope this helps. Try Halfords or any good after market car parts dealer for some different size plastic grommits.

Cheers
Mike

Ok that's good to know as if I do decide to remove the side bars I can just get some rubber gromits instead of buying 2 new running strips, I would imagine they need to be ones that either go in to or over the screw points on the roof to hold them in place. Thanks for that Thumbs Up

When the roof rails are fitted you need to increase the size of the hole in the strip to 19mm in diameter. Hence if you remove the rail the original "Fir Trees" will not retain the strip as the head is to small for the hole so you would need new "Fir Trees" with a head diameter of at least 25mm to retain the strips simply putting a grommet in may well fill the hole but will not retain the strip.
If you buy new strips they come with the original size hole which means the original "Fir Trees" will fit and secure the strip.

Cheers
Col
