Suicide hesitation

Hi all,
How can I get rid of getting rid of the Suicide hesitation on my 2006 2.7?

I've seen threads saying gearbox programming, re-maps or EGR blanking.
I'm not technically minded at all so that's why I'm starting this thread.

Thanks

Suicide hesitation. That is a good description !!

I am interested to see what responses you get, because my 55 plate 2.7 also has dreadful throttle response. Very awkward on roundabouts sometimes.

It is essentially the transmission failing to select a gear in short order. many of the transmissions these days are programmed to stay in top gear until standstill, which leads to a hesitation if you catch it out by almost stopping and then demanding an acceleration.

I wonder if there is a software upgrade to minimise it? Certainly mine is pretty bad, but you learn to drive around the problem.

Adam..

Hi,

It sounds like both of you could well be suffering from failing EGR valves (very common). A quick fault code read could confirm. Wink

Black Bess, yours can definitely be blanked easily. Nsp1, assuming your's is 06MY, then it too can be blanked the simple way. Thumbs Up

I would advise that you blank them anyway - they are dreadful things that chuck filth back into your engine. On my D3 (i.e. same engine), they failed and, having banked them, full power was restored. Very Happy

If your wanting more power, get a remap and/or an uprated intercooler.

If you have a 2006 or earlier, then blanking the EGR's will make a bit of a difference. A remap definitely makes a difference.
I haven't seen any gearbox remaps, but there was some talk on here about them a while ago. I've only ever seen gearbox remapping on race spec cars where the gearing has usually been changed anyway.

A gearbox reset and transfer box recalibration will often make a difference to that initial take off and acceleration, but it will adapt to your driving style again, so unless your always driving like it, it will get relatively sluggish again.

If you really want to take off, then put the car into SAND mode on the terrain response. Allow a few seconds for it to kick in. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible

You don't need sand mode - just use command shift and select 1st gear. Then it pulls away nicely.

The transmission defaults to 2nd gear to pull away - presumably to reduce chances of tyre slip and reduce the "nodding dog" effect of short burst of rapid acceleration in a low gear. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I had this on 2010 3.0 from new and occasionally on my current 2013 and it scares the Censored out of me sometimes Evil or Very Mad

Noticed when I'm wearing boots it's possibly caused by slightest touch of brake pedal when pressing accelerator. Why the hell are brake and accelerator so close together Banging Head Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

In ye olde 3.0 I flip over to Sport mode if I need to do a Starsky & Hutch getaway from standstill. Less suicide, more like mild self-harm.

But the 2.7.... L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso
RRS TDV6 HSE Lux (MY2011)... Nara Bronze / Arabica - now gone!

I don't find my 2.7 hesitant. I do have an Allisport intercooler fitted (and have a de-cat pipe waiting to be fitted; then will get a remap Mr. Green ) but, since I blanked my EGRs, I'm content with it's performance. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Thanks guys.
Will look into the EGR blanking and if there are any instructions on here.
Will also look into the remap.

Thank god it's not me then

Great way of explaining it
I have the same issue in my 2013 TDV6.
Under warranty can LR do anything or is it something I have to get used to
Steve

I got the EGR blanking kit off eBay delivered today so over the weekend I hope to fit it (weather permitting) so I'll let you know how it goes. It was only £17 so fingers crossed.

Can you fit egr blanking on a 2009 2.7tdv6 ? Also is it a easy fix to do for a novice? Only used to fixing an old 300 tdi defender

Try getting the gearbox adaptations deleted. As Bodsy says, this will delete the memory settings and re-learn your driving style which may solve the problem.

The are not quick off the mark in Auto, so if you need a fast getaway at a roundabout, an easy solution is to knock the gear lever over in to Sport while you pull away. No drama.

Thanks Tims but he's already been to my house and done that (plus a few other mods).
I'll see how this EGR blanking goes. I can live with it though if it doesn't work out.

I read this this thread enthusiastically as I wasn't even sure what an EGR was!
However, joining this forum has given me some great knowledge and confidence in tackling the somewhat smaller jobs!

I guess like many others on here, when you first get your RRS and pop the bonnet, your expression turns into the little emoti of the yellow face with all the teeth showing!

Since then, I've replaced some faulty parking sensors, led lights and a boot upgrade.
(Which is a major achievement for me!)

After looking into the benefits of fitting these blanking plates, would you guys say it was a relatively straight forward job?

Cheers,

Gaz.
