Advise on cambelt change

Hi guys I'm new member and would like some advise about buying rr's tdv6
I currently have one im looking to purchase which has fsh and done 80k miles
I have been told by a friend of mine who only services rr's that the cambelts should be changed at that mileage!?
Having looked online and also phoned the dealer he said it's too early and need changing at 105k miles!
Also says online that it's 105k or 7 years which ever is sooner, which do you go by the miles or time frame???
For instance If you had a car that did 1000 miles in a year surely you would go by the milage of the engine not time frame has the engine is not used
Bit confused any advice please has I don't wanna by a pig or end up with a big bill when ive just brought a RRS for belts to be changed

Thanks guys Michael Thumbs Up

Hi, at 105k the belts have had plenty of use so best to play it safe, also belts go brittle and hard after 7 years so as I said , best to play it safe. I had one break years ago on a Volvo and it cost lots of ££££s to put right, I took the gamble and lost Thumbs Up Just to add I had both belts done last service on mine, no more gambling Embarassed 2007, HSE, Cairnes Blue, Factory tints, Love it !!!

The key phrase is "whichever is sooner". If it does 1k miles a year then you change it at 7 years old. If it does 20k miles a year then you'd change it at 105k miles. It's not a difficult concept. The issue is that the belt will age and deteriorate over time even if not being driven. Indeed, one might argue that being left in one place on the pulleys for months at a time might be pretty bad for its long term flexibility too.

It's hugely important to do this as a failed cambelt means a new engine. A few hundred pounds vs several thousand pounds. You choose. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks!! Link won't work for some reason but it's on auto trader black 2.7td 2006 14,990 near Coventry looks nice
But just not sure now about the belts?! Would it be rude of me to say to dealer they should have been changed at 7 years old and would they consider doing them if I brought it? It's got fsh and 9 years old this year so shouldn't they have been done already?!

If you do buy it get them to knock the cost of the belt service off and get it done yourself, at least you know its been done then Thumbs Up

Yeah that's a good point was thinking that myself if it should have been done then the dealer should be paying for it
Not me has its part of the servicing plan

Also would like to know is 80k miles a lot for a second hand RRS??
What type mileage range should I be looking for ideally
Most of them seem to have 70-80k miles on clock,I know a lot depends on what you have to spend but in general what's considered too high a mileage to start off with ??
Cheers

Yes, it needs doing. Be worth using it as a bargaining tool to get the price down. Also figure on getting the auxiliaries belt done too.

To be honest, if they don't know what they're talking about on this sort of key service item then I'd be looking elsewhere. Or do a lot of research and go in with a list of things that get the price down. They'll probably tell you to go away and just sell it someone less informed than you. Thumbs Up

There are lots of RRS out there. Take your time. Bear in mind that vehicles that are now 8-10 years old are now in the realms of people buying them that can't afford to run them properly. Missed services etc. are ticking time bombs on a vehicle that can be temperamental at times. If the previous owner didn't get the belts done - presumably to save money - then they probably didn't do other important stuff either. Walk away and find one that has been loved - not just polished, but properly looked after. You want to see evidence of what has been done. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Thats nice low milleage for that year. Also belts should have been changed. I am near you and recently purchased a 2006 TDV6. The cambelt had been done so the sales man said however they had no receipt in paperwork for this so I got them to knock £500 off. Then I took it to Weston Autocentre in Cannock by me as they've done a few RRS cambelt services. They did all the belts for me including the fuel pump at the back which most places talk you out of and they did a major service. It all came to £700 and well worth it for piece of mind, the stamp and the reciept. I'm not Fat. RRS TDV6 HST.

That's all great advise guys thanks Thumbs Up
What sort of price are we talking for the belts change so I know what I'm dealing with from looking online it's £400-£500
If the dealers won't budge on the price or be prepared to get work done with a receipt I Can keep
I'll walk away!! Exclamation
Cheers

If I was buying that one I'd want at least £500 knocked off for belts. Don't forget there are 3 belts, the cambelt (the big one), Aux belt and the fuel pump belt (the hard one to change which most garages don't want to do).

If you just want the one belt done, indiependants will do it for between £400-£600. If you want all 3 doig thr price will usually be at least £600 plus and from Land Rover probably £800+. I had all 3 done with a major service for £700 and proof with all the old parts. Take of the service and the garage where I had it done was doing them for £500ish.

I'd be wantig that car for nearer 14k. It's possible it has been changed though if it has full service history. You can usually tell if you pull all the engine covers off and belt cover. Sometimes people who afford these motors in the early days have lots of money and don't keep some reciepts or just loose them! Like in my case. I'm not Fat. RRS TDV6 HST.
