Another TDV8, another turbo failure?

Driving home this evening, pull out of a junction and after about 50m lost power. No fault lights/messages on the dash, no smoke. Thought it might be a transmission issue as the engine was revving ok. Pulled over and there was a definite nasty burnt smell. Nothing obvious under the bonnet - intercooler pipes fine. Then noticed white smoke coming from right hand exhaust pipe. This wasn't there initially but developed a minute or so after I pulled over. I'm guessing the right hand turbo has gone bye-bye.

LR Assist came and picked it up with a flat bed and delivered me home as the dealer was by now shut. They'll come and collect tomorrow morning to take it to the dealer.

Here's hoping the warranty covers the total bill. I've just renewed my LR select warranty to the extended version but that doesn't come in until the 12th - I'm still on the old select warranty which has the £3k limit until the 12th. Fingers crossed it hasn't damaged the engine too.

On the plus side, I know the tracker works as I got home to find a voicemail message asking me to contact them as my vehicle was moving when it shouldn't! It was on the flat bed at that stage. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

White smoke from the exhaust, could be head gasket rather than turbo?? Would a turbo failure not be black smoke with Unburnt fuel rather than white?

Hope the warranty covers, least you have a proper LR one rather than the totally pointless aftermarket one I took out! TDV8 Java Black, Overfinch 22s

White smoke suggests that there is oil getting in to the exhaust stream after the engine which suggests, to me at least, that an oil seal has failed on the turbine side of the turbo. The last time I saw smoke like it was when an exhaust valve stem seal failed on a 309GTi - again, oil getting in to the exhaust stream after the engine so not fully burnt.

The coolant tank is still full which suggests that there is no leak of coolant e.g. from a head gasket. I was going to let it cool a bit and see if the tank was pressurised but I think I might just let the garage look at it as it is. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Turbos are oil and water cooled as well as lubricated. Does sound like a turbo issue but could also be an injector which would also give white smoke. Three grand won't cover a right turbo, they are 1500 a side plus body off, the left can be done in situ. Fingers crossed it's not serious. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

Well, if it's a few hundred over £3k then fair enough. At least they cover £3k. As you say - fingers crossed. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

LR Assist, through Enterprise, gave me a RR Evoque SD4 for the weekend. Enterprise told me it needed to be back this morning however. Not that useful but better than nothing. Rang the garage who said that I should just keep it and they would sort it all out later. Enterprise were insistent that LR Assist had said 48 hours hire. Dropped it off first thing (as I didn't fancy paying a week's hire on an Evoque if they later denied knowledge of saying "keep it") and walked to the station to get a train to work.

Garage phoned at lunchtime to say "you should have kept the Evoque, I've told Enterprise to give it back to you". Phoned Enterprise to confirm this was the case "oh yes, we held on to it for you in case you needed it again, it's here waiting for you." Argh! I think the issue is that the car went bang on Thursday and wasn't delivered to the garage until Friday afternoon. LR Assist gave me the Evoque on Friday but the garage couldn't look at the RRS until Monday, so the 48hrs that the garage is supposed to use to assess the work and arrange a follow-on loan car didn't effectively start until LR Assist's loan car had run out. The lesson here seems to be to only break down Sunnday - Thursday morning.

Garage is waiting for an engineer to visit and agree repair under warranty. Looking at £2k-ish apparently. They are hoping to have it back to me this week, which would be good. I just hope that the failure won't lead to a cascade failure of something else in a few weeks' time...

On a side note, I had an interesting chat with the LR Assist technician who came to look at the RRS on Friday morning. He agreed with me that the turbo had blown and didn't know why he'd been asked to visit. However, it appears that LR Assist might be losing their Discoverys in favour of Transit vans. The tech was not happy about this. Interestingly, LR Assist (which is actually run by the AA) don't use Disco commercials, they buy standard spec and then rip the seats out and put the commercial load bed in themselves. Tech pointed out that he wouldn't be getting out and about so well in the snow to help people with flat batteries etc. in a Transit. Nor would he be getting out to stuff that needed towing out of sticky situations. Result: reduced service to the customer.

Oh, and he wasn't impressed by the Defender owner who called him out for a faulty bulb! Defender drivers should be "hands on", after all... Rolling with laughter 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Hope your RRS is returned to you soon and the repair is permanent.

LR Assist extend the initial 48 hour hire period with Enterprise easily in most cases. By the way did you check the windscreen in addition to other things on the Enterprise provided Evoque? Check this to see why I ask.

I agree, LR Assist using non LRs would be bad. In addition to the reasons you mentioned, there are other advantages of Discoveries especially for Disco and RRS owners. I had a problem with my MY09 last year and the fault code wasn't 100% clear to the LR Assist guy. He fitted the MAP sensor from his Disco 4 in my RRS as they are fundamentally the same thing. By doing this he was able to diagnose that mine had gone faulty. Then ordered a new one, came next day and fitted it.

I decided to pay the optional excess cover so my excess is £0. I know it's unlikely to be needed but... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

The fact that production run was limited to three years effectively is proof enough that LR had issues with this car. Five turbos in six years happens for a reason and suspect you had recently parked your car up for a few days prior to failure? Glad it's on way to being sorted and hope you don't fall for Evoque. Not sure about AA but the RAC use four wheel drive Transits, a mate is local patrolman and in country areas, vans are automatically supplied in 4x4 spec, I believe city based units get 2 wheel drive. Thumbs Up 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

No, vehicle had been used everyday for a while preceding the failure. I suspect that the RRS engine bay is just too small for the TDV8 and the cooling is possibly not as good as it might ideally be. After all, the TDV8 and SC both have an additional cooling radiator to try to keep the engine cool. The SC doesn't have two hot turbos nestled low in the bay though. I've never had an overheat issue on the vehicle, as far as I am aware, so it's just my hypothesis that cooling is the issue. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

There are many TDV8's that have done lots of miles without problems but this engine variant does seem to have a weakness for eating turbo's. Does anyone have a theory or advice for how to avoid turbo problems, apart from not letting them stand for more than a few days?

I am worried about mine but in 4 months and about 4,000 miles it has performed perfectly. I just want to know if I should be doing something specific to minimise risk.

My failures always took place after car had been parked up for week or more, the first when it sat at dealers for six weeks waiting for new dash. The last after three weeks at Heathrow carpark Big Cry
I have several turbo cars that sit for years sometimes without being started and don't lunch turbos, my old Quattro has done 109000 miles since 1982 and starts and runs each time. So how does a car with 6k on the clock lunch itself.
My Fullfat has identical engine and historically doesn't have same failures. Interestingly I took out a warranty recently with a company, their inspecting engineer said that the most commonly claimed against was Sport, followed by M3. I agree that the engine sits in a confined space, is subject to wheel spray and condensation due to remote location so likely to have issues. Fingers crossed but this is the longest period I have owned a LR and it hasn't required emergency open heart surgery Whistle 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
