05 Supercharged - noise and gearbox delay

Hi everyone, I have a couple of niggles with my 05 SC which you may be able to shed light on.

-First, when the car is cold, engaging drive isn't instant, it sometimes takes a couple of seconds for the car to move. Doesn't happen in reverse, just drive. i.e. I can reverse out of my drive, then stick it in D and a bootful of revs gets me nowhere until the box finally decides to get going.

-Second, when coasting to a stop from 40mph or so I hear a droning rumble noise that seems to come from the front.
* It's there whether I brake or not
* Changing gearbox to neutral makes no difference
* Revving engine makes no difference

Hope you have some ideas before I take it to a specialist.

The rumble may be bearing related, have you tried seeing if turning a corner effects the volume/tone?

The gearbox may just need a flush Thumbs Up RRS gone

Get underneat it and give the gearbox pivot lever a good dose of WD40, free it up, let the wd40 dry and then give it a good spray of grease. That should fix the drive delay.

Sorry for not getting back sooner with updates, I hate tech questions being asked without a follow up Embarassed

Checked ATF, level ok.
Changed front right wheel bearing

Noise is still there, tried to check diff oil for colour but didn't have the right Allen key for the drain plug, now on order.

Didn't free/grease the selector, something to try when I am next under the car. Local specialist suggested a change of gearbox oil.

Finally got round to checking oil colour all round and all is good. ATF level fine with oil warm and engine running.

I however thought that since the right hand bearing showed signs of wear and replaced it, there was a chance the left hand one would be worn too. And indeed it is. Slight grinding noise when turning the wheel off the ground, not very pronounced but similar to what I hear when driving. Wiggling wheel while holding at 12 and 6 o'clock, there's a few mm of play.

New bearing on order. Hopefully this will cure it.

Done 78k miles just in case this is of interest to someone later one. Of course mileage will vary (pun intended)

There's a silver foil-like cover under the gearbox (4x 8 or 10mm bolts hold it in place) which you need to remove. The lever is on the driver's side, more or less under the driver's seat.

I had a look at mine, wiggled it and found no play and sprayed penetrating fluid all over it.

I have found until recently that while the problem with gear selection was usually when first starting the car on cold days, it would also happen after driving a few miles whenever pulling out of a junction or roundabout after stopping although the gearbox oil was nice and warm.

It seems to have cured itself now, maybe a small blockage in the hydraulics, will probably flush the box oil at some point.

Wheel bearing replaced, noise all gone Mr. Green

I also noticed a slight squealing noise (whistle) which would stop when applying the brakes gently and still rolling which added to the duff bearing diagnosis.
