So let me get this right, the concensus of opinions is that public sector jobs are a vocation and we should work hard and suffer whatever cuts are thrown our way. If we want more we should work just as hard building up companies and live happy ever after....

So what would happen if every public worker took this advice and moved out of the public sector, further more all those thinking about taking our 'easy life' places then realised they would be mugs to do so and also went into the private sector.......I seem to think that would be like an everlasting strike with no essential services being carried out.....all the money gained in your ivory towers would be useless when you dialed 999 and got no answer as your houses burned down or got robbed, what if you wanted to send your kids to school or get your bins empties, roads mended.........need I go on!

It really does wind me up when some people think they muct be working harder in the private sector than or others do in our vocation!

Lets put some facts in here about what is sustainable and probably why there is very little support from non public sector workers on this issue.

Annual cost of public sector pensions £33 Billion

Of £19.3 Billion paid in 2008 -9 to pensioners of the four largest public service pension schemes (excluding loacal government), £14.9 Billion was paid by taxpayers, not members contributions.

Average employee pay, plus employer pension contributions, £ per week - Private sector £479 - Public Sector £615.

Percentage of employees in pension scheme Private sector 43% but only 15% in final salary scheme - Public sector 90% with majority in final salary scheme.

Effect of reforms after goverments improved offer:

Civil servant 40 earning 22K per year with 18 years service £9,100 at 60 years, £12,800 at 67

Teacher 45 earning £32K with 23 years service - £15,200 at 60 years, £20,200 at 67 years.

All looks pretty damm cushty to me and why they need to be reformed.

Oh and the wan**ers at the head of the unions are creaming it in whilst their members suffer:

Union Leaders enjoying employer contributions to their own pensions worth as much as 40% of their salary, and when you see what they earn it is eye watering, shame they can't divyy it up with the people they represent in a good old fashioned socialist way.

Mike - Not sure what point you are trying to make but the figures show that the current arrangments are not sustainable, the country is broke and does not have a pot to pi** in, people just need to suck it up and crack on.

The union leaders are paid by members only as always they didnt lose a days pay yesterday and as always creaming it in and selling thier members down the river just like Scargill.

my point is that union workers are paid by members, private and public sector - i dont see what their pay has to do with anything

and the Local Government Pension Scheme is sustainable and well invested etc for the demands on it - i think its been identified as one of the better managed schemes...because if you dont know - there isnt just 1 scheme with one level of contribution etc Mike

Ah, yes you are right! Sorry , I meant to say most soldiers were too thick to get any other type of job!!
