It wouldn't be a bad idea if you was able to continue to work after 65 years of age that you didn't have to pay any tax on your income, that way anyone fit enough to work after 65 can do so and actually enjoy their full income plus it would be an incentive for them to continue working. lets face it the way this country is going we might all have to continue anyway Mr. Green

It does seem silly to get everyone working until 67. It will just increase the unemployment figures for school, college an uni leavers. We would be better off letting people retire at 65 and give them pension money rather than pay the youngsters unemployment benefits.

This would also cut down on sick pay as younger people should be fitter than older people and productivity should be better with younger employees as at 65 most people would not be able to nor wish to work their backsides off every day.

I however don't agree with the strikes. They are pointless and cost the country a lot of money in the long run by stopping businesses trading and therefore reducing the amount of tax and vat they pay to the government who would in turn have used some of the money to pay the employees of the public sector.

In my view they should be glad they have a job and any sort of pension. My state pension won't be worth Censored when I retire but I just have to get on with it. 2017 Range Rover Sport Autobiography

When I was working for the council I struggled to pay my mortgage some months but they still took 6% of my salary and I did not drive a RRS then Rolling Eyes Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

What the hell has that got to do with anything?
I could not afford a RRS until last year. I have worked my knackers off all my life and paid my way. Never claimed for Censored all. I have built my business from nothing and I am an employer.

I pay a huge amount of Tax & VAT so in effect contribute towards the pensions of the strikers. It is up to me to provide for my future, you can bet your nuts they won't provide for my pension. A state pension Won't be worth anything when I retire.

They chose the path they wanted to go down as did I. I might drive a RRS at the moment but the way this country is going I could be out of business shortly. I could be living on next to nothing in future years. But hey that's fine as long as the public sector get their guaranteed pension. 2017 Range Rover Sport Autobiography

There you have it ladies and gents conclusive proof that there are ALWAYS two sides to every story.

Fact remains we are all living longer.

It's going to cost all of us, possibly in different ways I grant you, to get to a system which is sustainable.

The same will be true of both our welfare systems and the nhs and there's simply no getting away from that Have i got the busted controller?!?!!?

Public sector workers strike? Not all of them. We forget the services - as a veteran with £12k a year after 20 years service (boosted by a war pension for early discharge) I certainly empathise with the strikers.

They were promised T&Cs and because the banks F'd up they are having those T&Cs overturned by millionaires (on both sides of the house) that paid public billions to those same bankers who are still enjoying their bonuses, golden parachutes and high pensions.

Good luck to the strikers - and the service folk who are getting shafted as well!

I was on strike today. I drive an RRS. I pay my taxes just like those on here moaning do. I don't have any kids so get Censored all back and am lucky enough not to have to call on the NHS. So I'm putting more in to society than I'm taking out in that regard.

Why did I strike? Was it because they want us to work longer? Nope; that's common sense - we're all living longer. Was it because they want me to pay a bit more in pension contributions? Not really; although the LGPS is actually adequately funded there is likely to be a need for more funds as we all get older. It annoys me to be told my pension in unfunded when I know otherwise but that's politicians for you.

Nope, I went on strike because I don't see why I should pay extra money in to the system when that money won't actually go to helping anyones pension funds to survive. It's going to help cover the f-off big debts run up by the Govt to pay for the bloody financial sector's monumental cock-up.

And before people ask how I can afford to drive an RRS, I'll tell you. I saved up a reasonable amount. Not enough, but a reasonable amount. And then my Grandmother died and I was left a bit of money. So I decided to put it in with my savings and buy the RRS. Running it isn't cheap but then we don't have kids and both have reasonable salaries. Sure, we should probably all be sacked as useless layabouts in some peoples eyes but we both have and do work hard in Local Govt. And we don't get more for working harder either. We do it because it matters. There's no overtime, no 'dividend' from the company, no bonus at year end if it's been a good year, no nice little tax write-offs carefully sorted by an accountant for us in our year end returns. We pay full tax each month, every month. And we pay towards our pensions too. And every few years the Govt tries to water down our pensions. Just as happened to people in the private sector. The difference? We're not about to stand around and let them do it without at least showing our displeasure. I'm sure many in the private sector would have said something if they'd known at the time that they were getting shafted on their pensions.

So, to those moaning that we might still have a bit of a pension worthy of the name, don't hate us because so far we've managed to hold on to it. Hate the bastards that screwed you over the years without you realising. And let's not fall in to the politics of "everyone down to the lowest level" which is so beloved of Govt and gutter press alike. We should all be saying "we want better" not "we want them shafted too".

Sorry, here endeth the rant. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Interesting reading from both sides.

All pointless BTW - all of the shenanigans that we exist in today is the mere tip of the iceberg. Until we get a "real" democracy in place and the ability to enter a cross in the box of "none off the above" and a "real" majority in the truest sense of the word, i.e. 51% vote.............it will be Groundhog day politically and this mire the banking T Censored s got us into will be felt for a very long time to come.

Strike by all means, expect to be listened too & achieve a backtrack, think again. Be grateful you have jobs {currently} and that you can pay into a pension, there's 2.7 million others out there that are willing to fill your shoes. Evil or Very Mad

BTW - makes you wonder why the Airports don't just sack the strikers from today, according to the people coming through the airports, it was efficiency all round.............something I never see at any of the UK airports normally, so surely ladies and gents, we have a far more beneficial and productive standby workforce than the main.........I know what I would do and in commercial world, all would do the same. My wife does! Nicest car in the school car park if I say so myself!!

I have not heard so much crap on a forum for a long time!!
The problems started when the government decided to take a pension holiday in the 80s when intrest rates were hitting 15% , now that for the last 10 years or so the rates are Censored poor there are not enough funds to pay out, the other problem is that the government has tried to run the public sector like a business and now there are too many layers of management earning more than private sector, there are 12000 public sector employees in Scotland alone earning over £100k a year, these are the guys milking the big pensions, not the 90% of the rest who are earning 20/30k and will realistically only get a pension of 10k!

Oh and x5pea, you usually make a lot of sense, but you are talking drivel, I would like to see you run a classroom of kids who don't want to be there! in fact that is another wasteful problem, kids in 4th year get paid to stay at school so the unemployment figures don't look as bad! We need to get apprenticeships back on track!

Certainly some good valid points put across like a sweary person does Mr. Green

.....he still missed the main point, no true democracy, although did touch on the "notice to strike" which is an obvious lack of democracy in any way shape or form. L322 Big Daddy SUPERCHARGED 5.0 Autobiography - Here & Now!
