How many strikers drive a RRS Whistle

My wife does! Nicest car in the school car park if I say so myself!!

I have not heard so much crap on a forum for a long time!!
The problems started when the government decided to take a pension holiday in the 80s when intrest rates were hitting 15% , now that for the last 10 years or so the rates are Censored poor there are not enough funds to pay out, the other problem is that the government has tried to run the public sector like a business and now there are too many layers of management earning more than private sector, there are 12000 public sector employees in Scotland alone earning over £100k a year, these are the guys milking the big pensions, not the 90% of the rest who are earning 20/30k and will realistically only get a pension of 10k!

Oh and x5pea, you usually make a lot of sense, but you are talking drivel, I would like to see you run a classroom of kids who don't want to be there! in fact that is another wasteful problem, kids in 4th year get paid to stay at school so the unemployment figures don't look as bad! We need to get apprenticeships back on track!
cheers
Dave

mate you know nothing about what i do and how i do it, id take that challenge any day of week.

Im not talking drivel fact is no matter how you wanna try and defend it public sector services in this country on a whole are poor, your wife may be the best teacher the world has ever seen but sadly she is in a minority when it comes to the public sector. Im not saying for a min that the government and these big bad bankers everyone keep harping on about aren't at fault but seriously wake up THERE IS NO MONEY TO PAY FOR IT. U want the rest of the country to put their hand into their already empty pockets to pay for it for you ??? When your strike inconveniences the rest of the country and costs the rest of the public financially..... any support you did have is going down hill fast with that approach.

Good luck tho Thumbs Up

The problem with this debate is its far more complicated than the government and media put across.

The Public Private sector debate is just a red herring, set to try and remove support and actually it boils down to a fair days pay for a fair days work public/private doesnt matter its all the same thing...equally valuable and certainly in both jobs some wouldnt do...but as pointed out - some very financial limited options in the public sector

Lets not mention here years of no cost of living rises, where we have seen bonuses - thats an 8-14% cut for public sector workers...

We wont mention where the real money goes eg MP's etc

We wont mention the benefit claimants 5% rise

really dont get me started on the deficit - ok lost of issues here about spending, bailing banks recession etc...and we should just accept it - but the Government like anyone, borrows money for stuff...just like people on here have loans for cars, mortgages for houses, or overdrafts for business...yes its a different scale, but its not a bad thing

Another point the private sector contributions for pensions are less than the public sector anyway

I think the point is - we can solve anything here...and the issues get clouded (i certainly have talked about them) but actually as citizens we should stand up for each other and the government should listen its not a public sector/private sector war...both are valid...worth while and entitled to remuneration and benefits. Mike

Ha! I doubt if you would last 5 minutes! I know I wouldn't , and I deal with the most obnoxious fishermen daily!

My wife took the job on as she is passionate about the English language and wants to pass that on,she left a better paid job in advertising to teach and she doesn't care for the pension, as we have enough salted by. people think that teachers have an easy life, but the fact is most work 3 or 4 hours in the evening and weekends! but the fact is that the government wants to move the goalposts, and they are breaking their "contract", which is just wrong!
We should agree to disagree on this one

Yes. Govt and private sector big business breaking their side of the contract. And the man in the street suffered and continues to suffer. And now they want to do the same to the rest of us who, thankfully, had pension schemes run by local public sector and thus kept the schemes running during the bad times.

The Tories screwed it up in the 80s (and Labour screwed it further with Gordon's pension tax raid) and they'll do the same again now.

And then successive Govts will keep telling people they need to save for their retirements...

There will, of course, always be at least one platinum pension scheme in the UK - the one that is run for MPs. Can't see that ever being scrapped! 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

United States 2006 Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE Zambezi Silver

Reading some peoples references to the 1980's had me thinking back to that time and remembering that era and wondering if again there is the same level of despair and depression. My memories from then are of a tougher time - higher unemployment, higher inflation, higher interest rates, seemingly every union striking regularly and often, angry music and the occasional mega disaster thrown in for good measure (thinking Chernobyl). Seems to me that times were pretty awful by comparison to today, but things did get better. By 1992 I had enough and headed west! Never have looked back.
Also thinking back, the memorable PM from that time did come out with some memorable quotes. A quick search and I found the following. Whether you loved or hated her, these provide some food for thought.

Margaret Thatcher, in a TV interview for Thames TV This Week [[1]]on Feb. 5, 1976, Prime Minister Thatcher said, "...and Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They [socialists] always run out of other people's money. It's quite a characteristic of them."

Every Prime Minister needs a Willie.
Referring to her Deputy Prime Minister William Whitelaw, and quoted in The Economist.
If my critics saw me walking over the Thames they would say it was because I couldn't swim.
If you just set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing.
If you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman.
It may be the cock that crows, but it is the hen that lays the eggs.
It's a funny old world.
Opening remarks to the Cabinet on 22 November 1990, announcing her decision to withdraw from the Conservative leadership contest.
Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It's not a day when you lounge around doing nothing; it's when you've had everything to do, and you've done it.
Of course it's the same old story. Truth usually is the same old story.
Of course, people tell me that I shouldn't gloat. Well, I am gloating.
On her victory over the Miner's strike.
One only gets to the top rung of the ladder by steadily climbing up one at a time, and suddenly all sorts of powers, all sorts of abilities which you thought never belonged to you— suddenly become within your own possibility and you think, "Well, I'll have a go, too."
People think that at the top there isn't much room. They tend to think of it as an Everest. My message is that there is tons of room at the top.
Standing in the middle of the road is very dangerous; you get knocked down by the traffic from both sides.
To me, consensus seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects.
If you just set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing.
To wear your heart on your sleeve isn't a very good plan; you should wear it inside, where it functions best.
We were told our campaign wasn't sufficiently slick. We regard that as a compliment.
When you've spent half your political life dealing with humdrum issues like the environment, it's exciting to have a real crisis on your hands. (On the Falklands conflict.)
You don't tell deliberate lies, but sometimes you have to be evasive.
You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it. 2011 BMW X3 35i Carbon Black

That is up there with the most stupid generalisations of all time. The majority of teachers can't teach? The majority of Policemen can't do their job? Firemen are rubbish? Nurses are Censored at nursing? etc etc.

As someone said above, your posts are normally on the money but on this thread you are not covering yourself in glory.

By that rationale our armed forces should go on strike as they have it terribly tough, are paid pretty poorly, jobs have been made difficult by cuts left right and centre and have had their pension terms changed. They are also suffering redundances, role and contract changes across the organisation.

I ain't no communist and my car was purchased for nowhere near £50K!! Very Happy

I do, however, have every sympathy for people who have worked their entire lives with the expectation of something only to have it taken away because they work in a sector that is loathed and despised by Gideon and his fellow old Etonian millionaires!!

Instead of ranting like a child and being possesed by the green eyed monster of envy over someone elses salary, car and lifestyle, make an informed decision like the rest of us in the private sector..... 1) Am i earning enough money
2) Will my income provide for me in retirement
3) If NO to any of the above >>> GET A DIFFERENT JOB and stop bloody whining!

I was in the civil service for seven years and made sure i got out and started my own company because it was obvious to a blind man that the public sector pay is only ever going in one direction.
Now i own a RangeRover Sport, have 3 companies doing well and growing steadily, but it's all down to MY hard work.
If its really that bad then you only have yourself to blame for putting up with it.... either put up or shut up! 2005 Rang Rover Supercharged

It reminds me of when the fire brigade were on strike insisting on 30K pa.

Ridiculous, yes they are heroes (about 1 hour a week), soldiers are full time in the thick of it for 14K pa and had to do the firefighters jobs when they wanted more money

Soldiers and teachers have similarities in that they WANT to do that job, anyone not up to it gets weeded out at the early stages of training, for the rest it is a vocation, I agree that soldiers are not well paid and should get mercenary money when in conflict, but as they want to do the job they are seen as an easy touch by the government. MY10 TDV6 SE (debadged Wink ), Santorini Black, Flappy paddles, Privacy Glass, 20" Stormers, Mudflaps!
