United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black
DPF

Hi,
does any of you environmentalists have a DPF on the RRS?
Can you tell me your experience?
I have it on my TDV8 (as a standard built in Germany) and have only problems with it...
Why do some people care about the environment? We are not going to save the earth anyway, why bother?

i got it - what is your problem beside that they are inefficient and have to be exchanged to newer ones.... Sad

Switzerland 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Stornoway Grey

I have it on my TDV8, is standard here. No problem with it. I also had it on the TDV6, different type, it was an add-on(was already on the car) and also no problem. I heard few people having problems with it.

Me environmentalist? I fly a business jet, Drive a 3.6l RRS + a Classic sport car, ride a 2.3l Motorcycle + 2 classic bikes, some environmentalist Laughing '08 RRS TDV8
I converted my diesel RRS to run on an environmentally friendly mixture of caribou fat and baby seals oil

The procedure for clearing the DPF is in the manual.....if you drive fast enough most of the time, then it stays clean. Thumbs Up

Hmmm, interesting... Thumbs Up
The problems I have experienced are as following. Did a 2000 km journey to the UK and next morning got a message "DPF Full, visit dealer" and loss of power. Got the car recovered to the dealer, he cleaned the filter and gave it back to me. After 400km and 7 days got a new message "DPF Full, see handbook". So I did the cleaning procedure and it is fine.
Spoke to Land Rover and they claim that the reason for it is that I do most of the time short distances and do not warm the engine sufficiently to burn out... But how do the guys in big cities do it then?
Comments appreciated...

Bobby, I know what a DPF does and how it functions... Whistle
My question is why the f..k does it keep getting full. First after a long drive, now after short drive (cumulative 400km)?
How can I prevent it from getting full?

I now have 8500 Km on the TDV8, never had the DPF full message yet. I do quite often a bit of highway, lets say couple of times a week. '08 RRS TDV8

At ~25,000 Km's on my 08 TDV6 and no problems with the DPF, never had a message. i hear it carrying out the burn cycle every now and again as it makes the engine sound slightly different on start up!

OK. The exhaust emissions are a complex mixture of solid and liquid components. These are going to clog up the DPF. That's why it gets full.

However, the DPF is able to regenerate, meaning the obstucting particles trapped in the filter can be burnt away so that the exhaust gases can flow freely. This process is not noticeable by the driver.

DPF regeneration is controlled by the temperature of the exhaust gases and the DPF. These in turn are controlled by the DPF software located in the ECM. The DPF software monitors the load status of the DPF and also other signals from different pressure/temperature sensors. When the loading reches a predetermined level, the DPF will start the regenerating process. There are two processes involved, passive and active. Long story, so we shall not go into it now.

Anyway, if the above regeneration is not working in your vehicle, it could be the software problem in the ECM or any of the pressure/temperature sensors.

Bobby, not meaning to question your omniscience about all things RRS... but I would suggest it is noticable to the driver as the engine noise changes slightly whilst the burn cycle occurs.. IMO anyway! Thumbs Up

well i got one of the first DPFs available by LR installed (after car purchase) and they have been all faulty now i am waiting since a year to get a new one installed - but still LR Germany says: not yet available due to technical probs..... Rolling Eyes

The second message was much more helpful. Bow down
I presume that as you said, DPF is fine but there is some problem with the ECM of the vehicle, since that was the first message i got ("Engine System Fault").
What would you then recommend? Can I get just the ECM software update to solve the problem? Or is there any other solution?

30.000 kms on the clock and no problems... Maybe the 2-stroke oil mixed with diesel helps?
