SMOKING BAN- How's it going then?

Is it working, have you given-up, are the pubs busier or quieter, what about restaurants, any problems at work, was it a good idea or a bad idea, is it right or wrong, for or against, how's it affected YOU? Question MY12 SDV6 HSE Sumatra/Ebony/Piano/Sidesteps/Privacy/Overfinch Olympus/JLR DRLs

Me neither, given I don't smoke Wink

It has caused the odd problemette here, what with a lot of our staff members being driven by the unions and therefore affronted by any infraction of their "human rights"... Rolling Eyes

Best thing that happened, I can now go to a resturant and enjoy my food without the awful reek of people puffing their fags Shocked
Over here there is a partial ban, if you sell food as your main business then it is no smoking, if it is mainly alcohol then you can smoke. A lot of cafes are adding on smoking rooms here.

It really pis Censored es me off, not just because i smoke, but because it is another infringement of our civil rights, yes sure ban smoking in pubs, clubs, resturants but only if the owner of the premises wants to. why should we be dictated to about how we run our businesses.

I do agree with a ban of smoking in public areas at work, but then again it should be down to the owner of the business to make that decision, we went no smoking weeks ago, and now my office smells much better, but that was my choice and that's the point it was my choice to do so.

My local pub is a drinkers pub (no restaurant or food)and they have said although it is to early to say what long term affect it will have on business, they did notice that it was quieter on Sunday than usual.

It will make me seriously consider giving up smoking, but i don't smoke much about 5 a day, but when i am out socialising then i would normally smoke more, so maybe its not a bad thing from that point of view, but it still an infringement on our civil rights

as a non smoker no problem, but as a chronic asthmatic it means i can now go to a restaurant or pub and not be poorly for days after, I have not been able to go out very often but, on the other side of the coin, it now means that when we do go out, E is a smoker, he leaves the table for 15 mins or so, it is a conversation stopper. I can see a slight down turn in couples going out, if the lady has to sit at a table in a place she does not know. It does not bother me at all and, not to come home stinking of ciggies has to be a pluss Thumbs Up

but how can a non illegal recreational pastime become illegal, i do not feel that this is the correct way to go, pubs always used to have a smoking room and that worked for many years, i do not feel that a total ban is socially fair, life is about making a decision and choices, we are slowly being stripped of everything. So where is the revenue going to come from now!!!!!!!!

more taxes on second homes??? window taxes (views from your windows has already been mooted)??? Taxes on vacant properties??? tax tax tax tax!!!!!!! oh and 4x4 TAX Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad no regrets!

I tend to agree with Envoy on the basis that this government is taking away our basic freedoms ever so slowly. Today Smoking, tomorrow drink, food, travel, cars. Make no mistake the government and it's henchmen want us to be totally reliant on the state and use every excuse from terrorism to health to decrease our civil liberties and increase their control over us. Why do you think we have the biggest CTV coverage in the world and still crime rises? You take away freedom and I think crime will rise - more personal freedom and crime will fall - this is my view but I have no facts to prove it just a feeling. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Up here in Scotland, we've had the ban for a while (we need it, the most unhealthy nation in Europe).

Anyway, it's amazing how quickly one gets used to a smoke free environment and then how quickly one gets upset when a smoker fills a room with smoke.

I get the civil liberties and don't like the nanny state, that said, when it comes to potentially harming people whom Sheep 2022 P440e AB

Ireland

We’ve had the smoking ban here in Ireland for at least two years now I think, if not longer.

In the beginning, when it was introduced all the pubs & clubs etc. cried fowl & said that their business would go down the toilet. No such thing happened, the pubs are just as busy as they always were. Most owners have built areas out in their beer gardens, roof terrace or patio area where they have them, to accommodate those who wish to smoke.

In fact some of the design & ingenuity employed in the creation of these areas is very good & imaginative. Turning what was once just a bit of unused ground into something useful. Some I’ve seen even have plasma screens & piped music to entertain the “Outcasts”

Like everything though, there are a few downsides. For one, you now can find large groups of people standing on the pavement outside the front doors of pubs smoking, which when walking by can be somewhat intimidating, as these people are increasingly tanked up as the night progresses & therefore can be abusive. There’s also a major litter problem, with all the fag butts on the street. Something that the local authorities are going to start taking the pub owner to task on.

All this smoking out the front of the pubs has also led to a new pastime being dubbed “Smlirting” instead of Flirting. As it seems that over the course of the night you might get to meet the same guy or girl out the front having their smoke. Which gives you the opportunity to chat them up, without the deafening noise in the pub drowning out your best lines, while you both enjoy a commonly shared pastime.

Another downside which became immediately obvious on the first weekend of the ban was that all the smoke in the pubs & clubs used to mask some rather unpleasant odours you might find in a hot sweaty room filled with people if you get my drift Whistle

Not of course forgetting the odd fart or two Rolling Eyes

But really all in all Ireland seemed to adapt very well & very quickly to what was deemed to be an unworkable piece of legislation & it really just is the norm now & is being fully accepted. It wasn’t until I travelled to the UK & was sitting in a pub & saw someone light up a cigarette & found it such a strange & alien thing for them to do, that I realised just how accepted & used to the smoking ban we were at home.

All very interesting comments. Like most, I'm a non-smoker and welcomed the ban in public places, like pubs, clubs and restaurants. However, Envoy's point is completely valid about the gradual and inexorable erosion of our civil liberties and freedom of choice. We are becoming a nanny state.

Whilst I think workplaces should be included, it does have some flaws and perhaps needn't have been quite so draconian in its scope. Nevertheless, it was generally designed to protect the rights and the health of the innocent (majority) non-smoker and, for that reason alone, should be applauded.
