The problem is that to constantly improve mpg and reduce CO2, the engines are driven at higher compression ratios and, more significantly, higher temperatures. This plays in to the hands of the dreaded NOx. NOx is a nasty little group that has real negative health issues. One of the great ironies of recent times is that biodiesel apparently creates more NOx than oil-sourced diesel. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

Just googled NOx - they'd better start banning it in farming too then as the tractors driving past my garden flinging that around can't be too healthy either then:

NOx is an issue in cities because in the presence of sunlight it reacts with oxygen to make ozone. Ozone is "a bad thing" at ground level - it's fabulous in the upper atmosphere but a nasty irritant of the eyes and lungs down here. A bit of NOx out in the fields is probably less of a problem as it can be rapidly diluted but in the relatively closed environment of a city street it's less desirable, 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Of course, Laughing Gas is also one of the oxides of nitrogen (N2O) and people breathe that for fun. |

My daily work transport has a single 29,000kW Diesel engine thumping along at 104 rpm (at the moment it is putting out 2,900kw at 47 rpm), four years ago we had to fit NOX reduction equipment and now NOX emissions meet international requirements however despite now using very low and ultra low sulphur fuels we produce huge amounts more particulate that disolves into sulphuric acid when it rains on our deck............. even running in hybrid mode, as some ferries do, they still have to generate the electricity somehow to charge the batteries so more generators are fitted................. more diesel is burned! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Are you sure the particulates form sulphuric acid Tim? If you're running ULS fuel where does the sulphur come from? Or is it just down to the amount of fuel you burn? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Once the carbon smuts dissolve in rain and stay on deck, the sun evaporates the liquid to a yellow colour fluid then to yellow crystal, I have always been told that is sulphuric acid. Might be something else with the low grade fuels we burn. Once out of port or the SECA areas then we burn the cheapest high sulphur fuel that the engine can handle. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Correct but from what I have heard the FFRR will be updated before the RRS - expect to see the new FFRR before the end of the year and the MY18 RRS in March next year. |

I think some people might also dispute that the Velar can do everything a RRS can do. I can't see why there wouldn't be room for both variants going forward. Also, if they make the RRS longer, as he suggests, that will narrow the gap on the FFRR which will also have to extend - at this rate the top models will be 100 feet long by 2030! |
