That would be you jumping to conclusions though . I really like my RRS: that's why I've kept it even though it's been less than trouble free. In fairness, most of the issues were when it was serviced by LR dealers. It's been much better since being looked after by an indie. With 150k miles on it, you'd expect some stuff to go wrong. But I didn't buy it because it's an LR. Nor did I buy it because it has Range Rover branding on the bonnet. It's a Discovery 3 in a knock-off RR suit after all. I bought it because I wanted something with 4WD for bad weather and off road use, something which was able to tow our 2.7 tonne horse trailer, something which was comfortable, something that had car like performance and less rolly polly handling than the usual 4x4 and something that was high enough to save my back getting in and out of ordinary cars. I'd have had a Discovery if it had a better engine than the 2.7 at the time. When I went through the list, the only manufacturer that ticked the boxes was LR and the RRS met the requirements. No one else made a vehicle that would do all I wanted. As for the earlier quip about the Skoda Yeti, our other car is a Skoda Octavia. Excellent car in all respects really. Bit too low for my back. Boringly reliable. I'd happily have a Yeti if it met my requirements but it doesn't tow big loads and is a soft-roader. So you see, I didn't buy the brand although I must admit that the RRS has got under my skin. It saddens me to see them kept only as weekend washing and polishing projects when they are so versatile. Take one off road and be surprised. Then take it 500 miles in the day and be smug with the ease and comfort. Sadly most are bought, polished, moaned about and sold on in quick time. People buy them for the brand and then move on to the next thing on the list. Fools and their money... My watch is a Seiko - boringly reliable and accurate to a degree that watches costing 20 times as much can't match. The money I saved on a Rolex is spent keeping my LR working... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

In the Velar, I would say the 240D would be the sweet spot. The 300D will likely be popular because of the headline power but for most use, the 240 will be quick enough with reasonable fuel use. Over on the Disco forum there have been issues raised about towing with the Ingenium lump: that's probably not a problem with the Velar: I doubt any will be used to tow very much. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

For the top spec car i,m thinking the P380 petrol engine. Too much negativity is starting about Diesel so i feel petrol will become the better buy.

I'm not so sure that the diesel lobby won't move on in time. Diesels are getting cleaner and they will continue to do so and we should not underestimate their impact on the positive side.

I understand Diesel being dirtier on a per litre burnt basis, but what about over a given mileage? Surely the increased fuel efficiency has to have some impact on the overall dirt? Typical Range Rover Sport traffic jam idling excepted of course...

One of the biggest problems with diesels is the way that they are used. They are not for small cars that do short journeys. Also people buy them because of headline mpg, yet many small turbo charged petrols are actually as good or even better for short trips. Short trips with lots of gear changing are not what diesels are about, they are much less polluting and more efficeint drive at steady speed over longer distances, ie once fully warmed through, yet many are used for commuter driving over distances less than 15 miles. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Still at least there was no negatives in the budget for Diesels.
