I've got valve problems with my 4.2 supercharged AJV8 due to running LPG for about 70k miles.

We've made a start on stripping it down, supercharger and inlets off.

Just looking at the exhaust manifolds and wondering if it's possible to remove heads while engines in situ.

Does anyone know if you have to lift the body to get the heads off on a supercharged?

On a diesel you take the heatshields off inside the wheel arch (what fun!) and then use long extensions to get to the manifold bolts and EGR bolts.

Once you have stripped the heads off, please post some pictures, it would be good to see some evidence of the damage that LPG does to these engines.

I expect you can lift the heads off with the manifolds still attached. But if you have the facilities to lift the body, it's much much easier and quicker to do so

Not sure you can remove the heat shields. But it does look like the heads would lift out with the manifolds attached.

Problem now is the bolts on the join to down pipe, one is stuck fast, have tried heat and it's not budging!

Also not sure about getting the timing chain cover off. Looks like will need a puller on the bottom pulley and there's no room.

Will post pictures of valve damage when the heads are off.

the wheel arch heatshields can be removed on a diesel.
I doubt they are different on a petrol.

They are in small pieces so will come out.

You need to mark them though, so you know how to refit them. It's a bit of a jigsaw.
Removal is easy though.

Take photos.... every time 1 is removed.

Had a look yesterday and it does look like the heat shield are removable.


But rebuilt the charger instead, here a picture of my shaft:

How long did it take you to get to the charger, nad how did you get the pulley back on ?

I've got a kit to rebuild mine and haven't gotten round to it yet.

EDIT: Oh and when you take the heads off it might be worth replacing the timing chains as thy're meant to be a nightmare to do (and you're half way to doing them anyway).

Luckily my friendly mechanic removed it, took a while there is one bolt under the charger which is a pita. You need to give yourself a long weekend.

To rebuild the snout didnt take long 3 hours maybe, you need a decent hydraulic press. I found this video and part 2 really useful.



Also, the rebuild kits dont all come with a coupler, make sure you get one of those to.

I guess it makes it a lot easier to work on removing the front.

Those bolts can be seized though.

Front end is fairly easy to remove, bit of patience and plusgas. I had to remove when changing my condenser on my old 4.2sc

I looked initially at gassing the sc. Like my old 90. I was advised the 4.2 required major head work to make it gas compatible.
