Erratic revs & rattling noise

Hi, hope someone can help on this one. I have a 2005 RRS 2.7 tdv8. Starts & ticks over fine. No warning lights on and plenty of power. I've just noticed when I'm deaccelarating or coming off the gas coming downhill, the Rev counter keeps fluctuating. I've also noticed, if you open the window a rattle sound can be heard to coincide with the Rev counter going up & down. And lastly, that same noise can be heard when I'm accelerating. It's like a metallic noise (sounds like a pulley rattling or something). It's quite apparent when u open the window but cannot be heard at all with window up. If I drive easy, it's not there, only under load it seems and lasts for about a second, goes and comes back again every 3/4 seconds. Help!!!....

Hi sportyboy. That's for your comment. Sounds exactly the same issue. Funny u mention from cold. I have it to a mechanic yesterday & we realised it doesn't happen when cold. It's a strange one. My concern is the fact it effects the revs. I'm hoping it's not a fault around the timing area! I thought someone would nail this one straight away. Mines going into workshop next Monday.

Well mine is due a timing belt but can't see it's that as it would so it all the time mine won't make the noise if I rev the engine stationary please keep me posted and all the best on a cheap fix Smile

Check the live values. Possibly oil temp sensor. That causes the engine to stall and be erratic due to the changing fuelling strategy. Bodsys Brake Bible

Hi folks. Still no feckin joy. The mechanic is scratching his head. I've even noticed one up for sale with a reduced price because the guy has the same fault. I'm not giving up tho. The lad looking at it is away until next Tuesday & is taking another look.

Hi folks. Still no resolve. I had g.box flushed & added Dr. Tranny. Had all pulleys & rollers & belts checked. Still none the wiser. It is such an irritating noise. I'm surprised no one has a solution as I've seen numerous RR for sale with this fault. i.e. It's obviously common. Gonna try a ford forum to see if they have had any experience.
