Nokia N80

Hello all, appologies for turning into a part time poster but life is rather busy!!

Got fed up with always buying phones based on what would work with the car I had at that point in time so went out last weekend and bought a next generation Smart Phone, the Nokia N80 , after nearly a week of ownership I have only scratched the surface of what it can do.....

Just out of interest, I switched blue tooth on to have a go at pairing it with the RRS (expecting no joy) low and behold, it works!!! :thud: 8)

As well as the usual bluetooth / infrared etc, it comes out of the box WiFi ready - I have already set it up to connect to the home network; it will let you surf the net; none of the old crapy mobile web page rendering - it resizes the page to fit the screen and pages look identical to those viewed on a full desktop. It also allows you to share files directly from your desktop including music, this allows you to either stream the music directly over the network or transfer the music file to the phone - you can slot in a 2gb Mini SD card and treat it as an mp3 player. Another plus for RRS / D3 owners; it comes with a 3.5mm jack adapter so you can plug it into the AUX input and use it like an iPod, the advantage over iPod though is that the player will play any media file including WMA.

The next step will be to attempt to gain access to my home wireless netowrk reomtley via 3G and see if I can stream music whilst on the move on the car!!!!

The phone is completely customisable on all fronts, it is as easy as any other phone in terms of basic set up and operation but as you start digging its true capabilities start surfacing.

If any of you like your gadgets this has to be the uber gadget of the year so far! I have mentioned only a fraction of this phones capabilities above - tap 'N80 reviews' into google and have a read..........

If your contract is up I would take a look at Vodfone, I walked into a vodafone shop on the high street and got a superb deal, after some time invested in negotiating I got the phone for almost nothing (list price against the contract I wanted was £150, I paid £30), stuff chucked in such as protective case, bigger Mini SD card and new car charger (Nokia have changed the charger connection to a much smaller one!! The standard boxed phone comes with an adapter to enable connection to old style nokia chargers though)

The deal may have something to do with a certain 15 billion reported loss in the last 12 months!!!!

NB* I am neither a Nokia or vodafone salesman

ST - You've bagged the phone that I've got on my list next!

Hopefully, if I can get them in CY I will be getting one of those very early doors.

MDP has the N70 and loves it. He has said that an N80 is next for him too.

Very nice piece of kit! Good choice!

The main thing that has hooked me is that none of the features are gimicky as in earlier attempts at smart phones, each key feature is genuinely useable in the real world. You do need though to have at least a basic understanding of networks to get the full benefit from the phone - one major point: if you intend on using it to surf then make sure you get yourself a decent mobile antivirus package..............

Only kidding, the point with this phone is that it is far more than just one device, can you make video calls from your blackberry, play mp3's, listen to visual radio, take 3 megapixel photos???

ST - just been on to Vodafone who told me that with the N80 you have to dial in to get emails unlike the Blackberry that automatically picks them up. Is this correct? Also they're quoting me £200 for an upgrade! 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
