Coming into this one late, but I've just moved to 3 from 02 and it's probably the worst thing I've ever done. They've sent me some poxy 6280. For a techie I'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to phones I have to say and I liked my 6230. It also worked properly with the car! The 6280 pairs OK with the car over BT, but stability is very patchy - the phone doesn't ring through the speakers either so if I have the radio on, I can miss calls. Also, it seems that I often have to re-pair it to the car as all of a sudden it will disconnect itself. Obviously, I can't use the cradle with it and I appreciate it's not a supported phone anyway - but it just goes to show what a boon the cradle was and how much use I got out of it.

Do any of you phone experts know if I can unlock my old phone to work on 3? It's a plain ordinary 6230, not the 6230i.

Hmmm Rolling Eyes

I think you'll find that the "3" network is not compatible with a 6230 as it was not built as 3G phone.

However 3G phone will operate on the ordinary GSM network ( backward compatible )

I have just bought the Nokia N80 ( 3g phone ) - but I use and still operate it with my original O2 GSM simcard. It is quad band and will work throughout the world [ TIM are you listening ] Wink

Shmoogle - so many of my friends have shedded floods of tears having made the error of moving over to the 3 network............ poor / patchy signal - texts never arrive - etc etc

ESCAPE if you can Shocked

you know it makes sense Wink

Shmoogle if you put your 3 Sim back in to your old phone it should work but only on 02 . Then in October time i think 3 will start to use the Orange network RRS TDV6 Gone but still around

Like most networks Jay - it is obviously very regional/localised on its sporadic signal/performance

Ie. its crap in the Midlands Wink

I haven't had a problem with the coverage yet, but then I haven't been anywhere too far away from civilisation recently. I'm even used to phone itself now - the interface is actually quite nice, even if the 3G features are still a bit clunky. My main bone of contention is really the fact it doesn't work very well with the car.... which obviously isn't 3's problem, just a bit aggrieved I've signed up for 12 months use of a phone that I can't guarantee on being able to use in the car, which is a problem as I spend a fair amount of time there at the moment (thus 2k miles in 2 weeks).

So are you saying that the only phones ratified for use on the 3 network are 3G phones? OK, I understand why they sell you a 3G phone so you can use all the video features etc, but if you're not interested in that and just want to make phone calls they actually STOP you from purely using the GPRS signal?

Seems a bit "Microsoft" to me... Confused

If I put my 3 SIM into my 6230, I get some message or other saying "invalid SIM" or something. That's not the exact wording, but basically it won't let me go any further without entering an unlock code.

Yeh i know that MDP but with 3 and the early day the network was ok cuz where you couldn't get a 3 single as you know it will jump over to O2.
But it was more to do with the hardest then the network's poor Performance. We've still got a off the very first 3 phone that was out and i used it for a bit just to see what it was like the other day and it was f****** s*** compared to me V3x RRS TDV6 Gone but still around

Maybe... but then like MDP says, maybe the 3 network doesn't even accept non-3G phones. Ask your bro though, he sounds like the expert.
