There are some other options and selections, it's difficult to type the detail all on my ipad, but you don't just have mud off road bias tyres (all with different biases I would add from extreme mud to normal duty), you also have all-terrains, with their properties.

Moving on the type my at's are mountain snowflake and are awesome on road, in winter and off road except in extreme mud when they don't clear as well.

The actual temperatures and conditions also factor in what's experienced. I wouldn't have a summer only tyre if I could avoid it, M&S at minimum, the perellis on the last sport were perfect in my opinion they survived Germany in the cold/snow, the uk in the same and summer. For what we get and the temperatures they do the job.

When the uk froze three years ago, the new defenders m&s tyres were fine too.

Always buy the best tyres you can, but make sure they are all season. Mike

With the mileage you do which seems pretty low, the tyres you have on now are more than capable to get you out of most sticky situations. Adjust your driving style accordingly. Makes sense to me.

Yes, but they won't stop you nearly so well as winter tyres will.

Running a premium vehicle on all season tyres in winter is like running a premium vehicle on budget summer tyres. Would you run your £50k+ RRS on £80 tyres in the summer? If so, don't worry about winter tyres. If not, then buy the winter tyres and have the best of both worlds.

It's wrong to think of winter tyres as wasted money - your summer tyres last a lot longer so the overall cost increase is minimal.

But hell, much better to spend money on LED tail lights or car wax made from the tears of virgins... Rolling Eyes 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Which AT is that?

If it has the mountain snowflake then it's a winter rated tyre, irrespective of how else it's marketed. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Like i said above. Its the other muppets on the roads you need to look out for who don't drive accordingly. Whistle Yes winter tyres will be safer, but M&S tyres are also safe to drive in winter conditions.

Summer tyres are safe to drive in winter too "if you drive accordingly". But neither summer tyres nor all season tyres will stop you as well as winter tyres will in cold, wet conditions.

Oh, and it's always the "other muppets" who are at fault... Rolling Eyes 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

BFG AT's are stamped with the Mountain Snowflake (i wasnt doubting what that also makes them) - ive had 6 sets, (4)2 on the disco, 1 defender and the other must be freelander.

Genuinely the best all round tyre going - and ive given them some serious off road punishment...happy days.

Towed a few D3's out of muddy forests on them actually - towed a disco with an air suspension failure out of a wooded off road course (we built), happy, happy days. Mike

The only problem with the BFG AT is that it doesn't fit the RRS unless you have an early one that can take small wheels.

Any other tyres that are properly off road capable, mountain snowflake rated and will fit a 19 or 20 inch rim? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I wasnt specifically referencing the BFG's on RSS sizes, I think they do do discovery 4 sizes now

Are there any RRS AT tyres on the market, i know there are the Smaller sizes eg those used in G4 made by goodyear. Mike

The only AT I can think of is the Grabber AT which is available in 255/50/19 and 275/40/20 to fit the RRS.

Goodyear do the Wrangler Duratrac but only in 255/55/19 so not an approved-by-LR size for the RRS. The MT/R has recently disappeared from their website though so maybe they've killed it off again. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

They always have issues with the MT/R - i think they only do limited runs, i was going to buy 4 for the defender at one spell and we could only get 3 for months! Mike

Goodyear MT/R is discontinued in 255/55x19.

Goodyear always seem to have supply problems. Please call us 01737 241370 for the quickest response Smile

Been offered some 3 year old Conti 4x4 Wintercontact for £550 (on 19" 6 spoke RR rims) with 7mm tread - but don't think the alloys are worth anything. Also V spoke style 1 alloys with worthless budget tyres for £250 so could cannibalise a set for £850 with fitting Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Love the test. Thumbs Up

Good for Goodyear but there are lots of choices out there that do the winter job just as well but availability is starting to get patchy.

We are doing our best to keep good stock of the Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme's in the important L/Rover sizes. Thumbs Up Please call us 01737 241370 for the quickest response Smile
