RRS TDV6 2.7 2007
Driving vehicle, oil light comes on, low gear mode selected message flashes up. Vehicle slows to a stop with transmission fault and engine management light on. Engine will attempt to start but won’t turn over. Car lifted and recovered to garage. Garage says it’s got an internal engine component failure. Most likely oil pump, but will most definitely need a rebuild. Thoughts please 😞. Owned car from new and always serviced annually.

Sadly the 2007 models are very susceptible to this. So I wouldn’t doubt it.

You may get away with an oil pump and some replacement heads.

I had this many years ago on my 2007 L320, the cambelt tensioner lug snaps off the oil pump casting resulting in loss of cam timing. Mine required new pump, new cams (as the lobes had spun) and cam chains. All valves were OK as they tend to snap the camshaft cap bolts when the pistons contact the valves, so at least the heads didn't have to come off, just lots of cam cap bolts!

The pumps were upgraded several times, make sure you get the latest as they are a stronger improved casting but also displace more oil due to revised rotor thickness.

Very! I'd get it changed as soon as possible or definitely if you have the cambelt changed. The general consensus is you're on borrowed time!

What are the symptoms. I thought very early ones were not susceptible to the. Is there a vin range

As far as I am aware all pumps up until MY2008 were of the weaker design. No real symptoms until it fails and you have piston to valve contact and a big bill to sort it out.

If it's the original pump it would certainly be a good idea to change it as it will definitely help oil pressure and hence engine longevity.

If the cars had a cambelt change before your ownership then it's possible a previous owner did it already. There are casting numbers that will identify at risk pumps/upgraded pumps. I'm sure I've seen them listed somewhere on here.

I changed the cambelt myself and knew that some of them snap the casting when refitting as the bolts were too big. Oil pressure light goes off soon enough when starting. It was the original belt that was one when i changed it a couple of months ago

Can you explain what you mean with this information

The oil pump casting has a number cast externally into it denoting its type with the two letters shown as a suffix. (See example). Therefore,when replacing with a new pump, the AB suffix with the 15mm rotor would be the one to fit. MY2006 / 2.7TDV6 HSE / CAIRNS BLUE

Where is this stamped

If you look on E/Bay for new Range Rover oil pumps- there are plenty of photos showing the casting number on the front face. MY2006 / 2.7TDV6 HSE / CAIRNS BLUE

That’s the latest revision from 2018 and is what’s on the pump I bought made in 2021.

The original pump in my 2011 was marked:

The pump number has been superseded several times and previous versions are no longer in production. Good luck getting an AB marked pump unless you have a time machine or somebody has really old stock. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
