Intermittent None Starting - Hard Brake Pedal On Start Up

Eh up all,

I’ve noticed more of late that when I jump in to start the car the brake pedal is hard, when I press the start button it simply does not start. I then repeat the process and press the brake pedal harder (really hard) and it always starts then ( or has done so far 🤔)

I had this once when I replaced all the discs n pads and put it down to that last year but now it’s a regular occurrence.

I might only manage to drive the car once a week as I work away.

I gather the car is waiting for a signal from the brake servo/abs to tell it your foots applied the brake and there is a pressure or brake pedal travel % calculation, without that confirmation it will not start.

When I drive it stop and restart - no problem at all, works every time 😁

I can only conclude some relationship between how I park it up and or the time between me using the car.

So I’ll try a couple of things, I park on a hill so tend to keep my foot on the brake, apply eps, put in park until switch off. I will now put in park, apply rob, take foot off brake and switch off to see if it makes a difference

I’ll also check again but no fault codes are logged relating to this and brakes are all perfect, I have no issues when driving.

I have also read it may be related to potential Vacum leak/loss - any tips on what and where to start looking are welcome

I’ve done some digging on this and there are a couple of old posts referenced but no conclusions drawn.

As always all help and suggestions are very welcome- if only to tell me not to worry too much 😁👍

I had this myself.

I originally thought it was an issue with the gearbox not thinking it was in park.

But I see its a common issue on FF Range Rovers, Discovery's and RR Sports.

Like you, I can usually press the brake pedal enough for the switch to activate to allow a start.

I understand its vacuum related to the brake booster.

Mine hasn't done it for a little while, I've had the Sport for 2 months now and it happened twice now.

There's loads of advice online, seems a common issue.

Thanks I’ll do some more digging, it’s not done it lately and it’s never not started it’s just odd when it occurs.

I’ll look more into the vac pipes and see if I can find their exact location and if there’s a common failure point.

Eh up all - update

Well it did it today with the Mrs 😂

Started though at third attempt, real mystery this as it’s definitely related to the brake pedal as I was away all the other week and ran it myself on Saturday

Parked it up , consciously put it in P then foot of brake then applied handbrake.

So it’s back to trying to figure out what’s causing this hic up.

With mine been an SDV6 would that make a difference - why should it 🤔

Anyone give me any pointers on the brake Vacum hoses to check.

I’ll try and have a look this weekend as home

Thanks for this - will look at the servo issue but great to know about the PCM and IPC software

Is it a dealer only job in that case 😤🤬

Will chase it down now I’m sure and I will update this thread

I’ve only come across rallyesport who’s commented so I was thinking it’s quiet unique 😁

Hello again,

Id be interested in updates for this.

Thing is it would be putting a price on the SDD update from an independent dealer.

Money for old rope, I'm not being cynical, its just finding someone who can provide the update Disco Mikey is on about, I'd also like to think I could update other modules aswell, as I believe the last time mine was at a official LR dealer was a while ago, and they would necessarily do an update, only if the customer asks.

I’ve went to see a local Indy I trust and he’s looking into this for me and thinks he can sort

I’ve been working away through most of Aug n September but back in a week

I’ll have time to catch up with him and I’ll report back

I always close out my threads as it really helps others - I know because this forums and its members have been a great help to me 👍

Typical the wife’s been using the car ad-hoc and it’s never repeated 🤔

Hi, I just wondered if you got the update done and if it improved the issue. I only ask as I've noticed the past couple of weeks that mine has been doing exactly the same thing a couple of times. A rock hard brake pedal and then a click when I press start. It did it twice this mornig before successfully engaging the starter.

I still get the hard pedal on the odd occasion myself.

I put it down to a possible vacuum leak somewhere, I'll investigate further as it gets worse.

All I updated was the IPC file which gave me the 2012 instruments upgrade 'look'.

I didn't upgrade the main engine ECU flash program.

I just press the pedal harder if it fails to trigger the starter.

Not entirely sure what the issue is, other than a possible leak.

Maybe others could shed some extra light on the subject.

Well the cars being starting with no issues, brake pedal still feels hard though so I’m not confident there isn’t a problem Neutral

I’ve been flat out at work with no time to get it to a garage to code read, maybe get chance after Christmas

I’m sure there’s a issue and I know simply keeping my fingers crossed is not a plan Rolling with laughter

Rallyesport- that’s exactly my symptoms Thumbs Up

Thanks for your replies guy's, much appreciated.

It's strange, it did it again, twice, yesterday and then the last two times the brake pedals been normal and its started normally too, bizarre !

I read on the ffrr forum that someone, with simialr experiences, changed the starter relay, as it was pitted, this seemed to have solved their issue. I've ordered a new relay, I'll change it and will monitor it.

I know that it will start, normally on the third attempt, but it shouldn't be like this.

Check your battery connections. The 10mm bolt that held one of the secondary cables onto the main pos clamp needed nipping up.
