My TDV8 has been fine until an hour ago.

Driving along the motorway fine, came off slip road and went up a hill. Gentle pressed the accelerator and a red triangle and restricted performance warning on the dash. I noticed that the engine sounded different, like someone had removed the exhaust boxes. I gently nursed it to my cousins doing 60.

I plugged in my GAP tool and no faults were found. I stopped and restarted the engine. The warning extinguished and the engine tone was normal.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas, maybe intercooler hose ?

I get a similar thing on my TDV8 very occasionally, if I turn it off & restart it all is okay again, I've mentioned it to my indi who is excellent, and he could find no faults at all , I don't get restricted performance just a more throaty exhaust note and "engine fault" message, it has only happened once this year so far. Mine is a 2007 with 110,000 miles.

Many thanks for your reply, it's helpful to know that others have had similar peculiar issues.

I had a similar issue on a vw diesel a few years ago, and found it was the vanes in the turbo sticking. I did get a fault code each time that happened. My indie then, said to drive it harder to clear it. Apparently driving gently/economically doesn't help vvt type turbos as the vains clog up with carbon and stick.

Perhaps I need to drive my RRS a bit harder instead of cruising about.

I have had the same issue for many years. It is a sticking variable vane actuator. The vehicle can go for months without issue then for periods of up to a week the restricted performance can reappear - restarting sometimes works in getting rid of the reduced performance issue but sometimes not. My car runs a cleaner exhaust in restricted performance mode. To fix the problem you will need to remove the turbos which means body off chassis - which is not going to happen any time soon - so I live with the occasional issue.
The vehicle is now 14 years old and my local dealer tried to get rid of the issue while the vehicle was under its new car warranty - that shows how long the issue has been going on. Just another Landrover quirk

I've had my 2010 Autobiography Sport for nearly 4 months now, and Ive had the restricted performance come up twice, once in July and August, the same as you describe, when pressing on ever so slightly or giving it some beans, it catches the car off guard, the red triangle appears and I get a deep throaty tone from exhaust.

My Icarsoft and now GAP iid report the same issue -

My motor has done 92,600 miles. Previous owners had reconditioned turbos at 62,000 miles in 2020 (apparently a siezed passenger side turbo) and new EGR's at 90,000 miles in February this year.

I bought the car on the understanding that it was niggle free and the main issues were sorted. I read all the time about this same fault on FFRR's as well, so its been going on years, even on the FFRR forum saying someone had the issue at 30,000 miles at relatively new age.

I've recently flushed the engine and used Millers C1 5w30 and given it a dose of Liqui Moly Ceratec, which has quietened it down no end, and I'm sure I'm getting a good 1.5 MPG better since putting it in 400 miles ago.

I've been running it on Shell V Power diesel on the last 2 tanks (430 approx miles to a tank mind you and 21.8 MPG average, which I think is as little low chugging up an A road and back daily at approx 40/50 mph with continual stops at T lights and contemplating roundabouts and built up areas on way to work.

I'm going to put Shell fuelsave in it next with some Wynns turbo cleaner which adds to 60 litres, and see how that goes on for the forseeable.

I do think its a waiting game though, with the turbo VVT rearing its ugly head again, I had the same with my Fabia vRS 1.9tdi, an old chap had the car with 26,000 miles and I had to replace the turbo, and you can easily get to them which is a far better job. Even though I was told by the previous owner x3 that the turbo's were replaced through the wheel arch at his independent LR back in 2020.

I do spank the motors arse on the odd occasion, and I find it wont put on the red triangle/restricted performance, I tend to find it'll do it on a longish part throttle pull around 3000 rpm (twice).

Very bizarre, just getting used to the world of ownership of these beasts, its gradually growing on me!

I've got dumb stuff fixes, like this weekend fitting a second hand engine and gearbox undertray as mine didn't have them on there when I bought it, why the hell not I ask you, same goes for the diesel filter metal cover! I guess it was "customer don't need that anyway, cant be assed to refit that damn item again", idiotic garages not replacing stuff, does my head in!!

Onward and upward!!!

Can anyone diagnose my fault though? Control A is passenger side isn't it? and maybe the actuator not commanding the electric equivalent of movement versus boost?

Just a quick update.

I serviced the RRS today and thought whilst there, I'd check the movement of the turbo actuators. N/S moved freely but the O/S was sticking on its return. I've lubricated both actuators and the O/S one is now moving freely.

I'm not saying that this caused my issue but maybe it didn't help.

I also changed the fuel filter, I removed a Britpart filter and replaced with a genuine LR one. I must admit I have never used Britpart filters, not even on my old D2. Just my own feelings.

I'll be using the rangey this week so we'll see.
