RRS 4.2 S/C front driver side is leaning lower

Hi Guys,

My RRS 4.2 S/C front driver side is leaning lower. A local indy LR garage in Essex has diagnosed a suspension airbag leak on one airbag and also a faulty valve block that needs replacing. I've been quoted £470 for parts and labour for the valve block and £498 for parts and labour for the airbag replacement.

Would you say that is reasonable?

Would be easier to judge if we knew the how much does he charge for parts and which chunk of the 976 quid is labour. Regards etc.,

Valve block suspension front - £223.13
2hr labour - £170 (£85PH)
+VAT
= £471

Shock absorber front -£230 + 20% VAT
bolt - £11.44
nut - £3.79
2hr Labour £170 (£85PH)
+VAT
= £498.28

Is he proposing changing just the airbag or the whole strut? If it's the strut, it really ought to be changed as an axle pair - changing a single damper isn't a great idea, especially if the existing units are pretty old and tired.

The question is whether he's using genuine LR-boxed and badged replacements or OEM or aftermarket items. For OEM stuff, the prices are probably right. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

They said the airbag can be changed individually and the valve. There was no mention of strut.

They use original or OEM

Yeah, the airbag can be done separately. Parts prices appear ok in that basis. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Used valve blocks on eBay are £15 or so. You can change the seals yourself with a £20 kit.

I've done all of mine. There's plenty of videos on how to do it.

I'd surprised if both the valve block and air bag have both gone.

Start with the cheapest fix first and go from there.

PM sent back to you. I’ve done the front valve block at home and it’s not a 2 hour job. It’s more fiddly on a 4.2 due to the radiator, but I think my record was about 35 minutes. This link explains it (duckoby74’s post, not the first few).

If its any help, I've just had 4 shocks (complete units and a new compressor fitted).

Fronts £232 ea. Rears £277ea and AMK compressor fitted + the obligatory software update £788. Total bil £1996. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

It’s to calibrate the ride height after changing over components. If you’re not using the car this afternoon or evening, open the bonnet, take off the plastic battery cover and you’ll see the fuse box cover. Pop that off and remove fuse 3. It’s a 5A fuse, top left of the line of fuses, second one down I think from memory.

This effectively stops the auto settling of the car overnight. It’s a function to level the car when it’s parked up unattended.

However, before you do that, put it in extended mode with the middle console switch, so the suspension is at full travel.

After removing the fuse, make a note of the distance from the floor, through the centre of the wheel, to the top of the wheel arch.

If any of the arch heights are lower overnight then you know you have a leaky airbag on that corner.

We’ll make a mechanic of you yet !

(And don’t forget to put the fuse back where you got it from..)

Picked up my 4.2 SC this afternoon after having the ride height calibrated and the adaptation software reset following me changing the ride height sensor and PCV valve.

£48 from specialist Indy Ian Barclay In Birkenhead, which I thought was pretty good value !
