Spare wheel condition

Eh up

Well I dropped the spare again today knowing it was not in the best condition!! Rolling with laughter

There’s no way I could even fit it given the corrosion on the hub, let alone the sheet of Censored that fell off on the first pass of the orbital









Anyway will give it a quick refresh over the next few days, also want to put a valve extension in as no way I can check pressure in it’s current set up🤬

Just rough sanded the top face so far, rear has corrosion across the rear so will strip back tomorrow







At least then I can swop wheel over if ever needed, condition of alloys was rough - guess if I’d been hanging under a car for 10 year I’d be rough Rolling with laughter

Still only thing looking worse is the Mrs in the morning and that’s just 9 hours Rolling with laughter Whistle

At least it’s holding air. I’ve seen the corrosion so bad that the beads were leaking as fast as air was going in. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
Born and raised in So Cal. Moved to the UK in 2018 for a few years. Now in Poland and looking at moving back to the UK.

Well mine was bad but holding air at least, not that it’s easy to check it’s pressure given what you have to do to get to the valve Big Cry Rolling Eyes

Well it’s finally prepared and primed up,




Will wait to throw the basecoat and clear on until it’s dry outside Rolling with laughter

I’ve also an idea that I’m going to drop a flexible valve extension on so I can then more easily check the air pressure

We use a gauge/inflator similar to this:

I have my valve oriented so I can access it with the pull end pretty easy without dropping the tire at all. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Is it simply an extension through to the tow mount, how does the wheel drop Question Thumbs Up

Might as well sort Mine while it’s off - last thing I want is a flat spare

Just release the extension from the clip and it threads out when wheel drops, used extra long extension from a truck, works for me as I have a under tray covering my spare so can't check it from underneath without removing tray first.

So the bracket on your tow eye mount I presume you fabricated so the valve end slots/ screws in ?

Then you unclip the extension from the tyre as it drops or from the bracket on the tow eye ?

Seriously thinking of replicating that as saves me grovelling around as will still have to find the extension end underneath

Any chance of a simple diagram / hand drawing at all , if not no issues 👍

You can use either of these, I used the first one, just got them complete from a local commercial tyre company, just threaded it over the top of the rear cross member and out through the unused tow socket hole. If I remember right I did use a couple of 210mm extension so it gave me a bit more to play with, although I do recall seeing some on amazon at 350mm long.

NoExpert - can see the image now, I’ve actually got a couple of these for my compressor set up - just trying to avoid the grovel - knees are knackered these days Rolling Eyes

I hear yah about the knees, I don’t enjoy rolling around under cars either. Thank goodness for lifts at work.

My only small thing with those extension hoses is they can leak (seen it numerous times working in auto shops). I’m not saying it will leak or that it’s not a good idea, just be aware that it can happen. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Used the extensions for years on trucks and trailers with twin wheels and some off them run upwards of 120psi. never had a issue with them leaking, only when they have not been fitted correctly, no more likely to leak than a rubber tubeless valve unless they are the usual cheap crap extensions. As it's only a space saver spare could always get the tyre foam filled, would not have to worry about anything leaking then, just be a bit heavier.

NoExpert - fair point on the valve leak, I will wrap the threads with ptfe tape as a bit of extra precaution , for the few quid it will cost to try am going to give it a go.

Measuring up last night recon 300mm extension might just reach to tow plate over top of tyre between floor and outer rim wall, otherwise slightly longer run down through inner rim and under tyre which I want to try and avoid

Col - good idea on the foam fill but as you say will add extra weight and reduce my MPG Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

No paint on yet as too bl88by wet - will update thread when I manage to get it sprayed Thumbs Up

As I said I have seen a awful lot of these extensions over the years, and have yet to see one fitted with thread tape, the "O" ring inside the nut part is quite sufficient, if it is quite adequate to hold 120 psi plus I'm sure it will hold 35/40 no problem, being a parallel thread as well I don't think it would achieve much anyway, but the choice is yours. I will have to have a look and see if I used one or two extensions as it was some time ago can't really remember.

Well managed to throw some paint on today, not ideal conditions but want the wheel back underneath

Base coat shot well and managed to lay it flat, clear coat was paint I had a while and despite thinning off just orange peeled on the face Big Cry Embarassed

It will flat back if I can be bothered 😕 it’s just a spare I keep telling myself but can’t help being a perfectionist if I can Very Happy

It’s a hundred times better than it was and it will go on the hub now .




Just to be clear the above is prior to me painting Rolling with laughter







Waiting for valve extension hopefully tomorrow then will refit once it’s flashed off on Sunday

Next job ......rears discs n pads and possibly front bumper Thumbs Up
