My13 L320 tailgate external switch replacement

Over the last couple of days the external boot switch on my car has stopped working. The powered tailgate still works normally if activated from the dashboard switch or key fob. The car is a MY2013 L320 with keyless entry.

My thinking is to replace the external switch. To do this I need the correct part number and to access the switch plus wiring, etc.

Firstly, having searched old forum chat, I am unclear whether I need to order part LR083610 or LR079909. Which of these is the correct part (or I may need a completely different number)?

Secondly, how easily is it to access the switch? Normally, I would look at YouTube and do it myself. However, as yet I cannot find guidance on how to do it. Any advice how to do it and is it straightforward for a complete numpty like me?

Thank you in advance. There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley

They are quite easy to change, although you do have to remove the tailgate internal trim panel to get to it as it can't be done from the outside. I do have a genuine l/r switch laid here somewhere will have a look see if I can find it and get part number from the box, but I think it may be LR020997 just to confuse things.

Cheers

Thank you Col Bow down

How do you remove the internal boot trim from the tailgate please? I had a quick look this morning and it is not immediately obvious. There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley

Hi,

think its the same switch as the D3, if so it might be worth removing the switch and the rubber cover to check in side that the paddle moves ok to operate the micro switch, also check the voltage at the multiplug and the voltage if you can at the microswitch, your looking for 12V, as the wires can corrode and you replace the switch (solder in a new one) and it still does not work. Rolling Eyes

worth checking first if you can

On my MY13 Sport it was a sealed switch bonded together, and you can't open it up without destroying it, looking at a new switch I have here it is a bonded one as well.

Hi Col - did you find out which part number it is please? I think that you may be right with the latest suggestion of LR020997 but it would be good to know.

Thank you in advance. There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley

Hi, yeah sorry forgot to mention it, the number of the one I have here is LR042648 which may actually be for a very late model Freelander, I think it may be the same as the Sport though just different number, looking at a parts list LR020997 is the one listed for the Sport with Vin. starting CA on, so to be on safe side I think I would stick with that number.

Cheers
Col

The original L320 had that switch, the facelift has a different one. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Success! New switch fitted yesterday and all working well. Thanks to Col for the link to the instructions to remove the boot interior trim panel. Very useful. In all, it took about an hour to do the swap. One small note for anyone doing this job - make sure you do not fit the switch upside down. We did this and had to remove and it and re-fit correctly (ease mistake to make).

Thank you also to Sophie at Duckworth Land Rover (site sponsor) for supplying the part. In fact, at £27.02 delivered Sophie was the cheapest price out there. I was willing to pay a little extra for genuine part and surprised when Duckworth were the best price with good service too.

Cheers guys! Another problem fixed with the help of this forum.
