Hoping some of you could help with some advice on my issue below.

My girl friend has been using my car a lot recently and doing quite a bit of motorway driving.

The car was last serviced in March 2022 by ROCKA LR i checked oil level after service it was at full mark. And so i've not really checked the oil level since i think. But yesterday my g-friend rang to say the oil light came on which sent me into a panic, but after quizzing her, it was actually the yellow check engine light but i said to be safe, pull over when you can and check the oil level.

The oil level is now at the half way mark. Which is so strange as there is no oil on garage floor where the car sits 80% of the time. But checked today and it does look like there is fresh oil sat on the underside of the protection pan below the engine but not much. So i just had some questions:

0. Is there a warning light or msg that comes up for oil level on the RRS (sorry i know i could probably find this info in the owners manual) if it gets to a critical level?

1. Do most of your RRS loose that much oil during a year of driving.

2. Could her driving at around 90 mph cause a crank seal leak etc and thats where we are losing the oil and its not dripping out onto the floor over night?

3. I had similar leak in Feb 2021 and les pauls garage said they thought it was the crank seal and said they replaced it, how long should this repair last? The problem is if i took it back to them, they would probably just tell me its coming from another seal so i have to pay again.

4. I've decided i love this car so much regardless of some issues, i want to keep it until the government won't allow us to drive them, so i will invest in an IID tool to try and read what the check engine code is, i don't think its related to the oil leak!

5. Its just the oil that scares me, would you just take it straight into a good indy or would you just keep topping it up with oil until the next service, i really wish these cars had dick stick, i guess theres no other way than the warm the engine and wait for 12-15mins each time.

6. Final question, do any of you work under your car with it in raised suspension mode with out a jack or axle stands? as i don't have either but i would love to get under there to remove the metal cover plate and try and clean all that old oil off so i can try and see where the oil is coming from.

A 2012 model I guess.

I would get it sorted sooner rather than wait for service.
Could take 6 weeks to get it booked in!

I don’t think any one would recommend getting under the car regardless.
Axel stands are cheap

You will probably need a good socket and long lever bar to get the under tray off.

When you check the oil level via the menu, what message are you getting from the readout?. Have never put a drop of oil in my S/C between services in nearly ten years. Might be just a faulty oil level sensor.

Sorry for delay in reply. No message comes up at all. Ahh thats interesting that you have never once had to add oil. I thought thats how its meant to of been. How is your beautiful SC running? Have you had any issues with it? Are you going to keep hold of it for the foreseeable future?

I really don't understand what's going on with the oil level readings.

Since the check engine light first came on, on Wednesday. I have checked oil level twice. Both times read the oil at the half way mark.

Drove it to work yesterday (friday). Checked level when i got there (with the car parked on almost a flat road) reading this time said oil level at max.

Then checked oil level again when i got back home. Reading this time said oil was at half way mark. Then roughly 30mins later moved the car into the underground garage (again on level ground) waited the 10mins checked again and level was at max again.

So i can only presume the oil level sensor has gone bad. Maybe thats what's triggered the check engine light to come on. But i until i take it into a garage, or until i buy an IID tool i won't know! i really want the GAP IID tool, its just the price is crazy. Hi, as I don't do many miles these day's probably 3-4k and after all this time as it's long bought and paid for and stand's me in at nothing now so no real logic in changing it, the way I look at it now £80k+ buys a lot of maintenance and at only $110.00 (£60.00) road tax no point don't have slightest inclination in buying a RRS2 or 3 for that matter either, least of all a oil burner one. Only warning light I've had appear on the car was for the TPMS and that disappeared by it's self. Apart from service items and brakes, tyres etc. which would be normal on any car, it's had some of the usual stuff like lower front arms, rear door lock and a few other minor bits and pieces but nothing much, probably tempting fate now, but never had any issues with the engine whatsoever.

Thats really good to hear, makes me feel better knowing your experience so far as i want to keep it as long as possible. Apart from the small oil leak previously this is kind of the first fault light i've had. Just read online:

That a common cause of the check engine lamp to come on. Is a loose gas cap. My misses said the light came on maybe 30mins or so after you filled the tank.

So i'm praying she has just not put the cap back on properly. And that could also explain the different fuel readings. But she has filled it so many times & never cause this issue so it's probably not this.

So to check this first thing in the morning. And will also check battery voltage. Will let you know the out come either way. Just going to pray its a cheap and easy fix.

Does mention this, something to do with evaps system I believe, also says NAS vehicles so not sure if same applies to U/K/Row vehicles. I suppose the logical thing is to check the cap is tight and sealing.

Not like the good ol days, if you leave the fuel cap off the FJ or EH you didn't know till someone pulled along side at the street lights and wound down the window and told ya ( fuel caps off mate) or you found out next fill, which could be weeks.

Thanks for all your help so far.

I think you might be right Andy as yes the filler cap was indeed tight, so it's not that.

I just emailed my contact at a LR main dealer service centre about the check engine light and oil level issue.

And he said this:

"To begin, the oil level on the dipstick or digital display only relates to one litre not the entire contents of the engine".

I always thought that the top oil line (on the digital display) was the full amount and the bottom level was if the engine was almost empty.

Do you understand what he means by the above?

He also quoted £216 just to read the codes for me. So i pulled the trigger and finally ordered the IID tool. So i just got to pray its something simple i can fix myself now to make the money back on the IID. Or i might try out LLR Range Rovers (indy) as they were recommended to me as good honest guys and they charge £50 for diagnostics.

Will keep you posted on the outcome.

The electronic dipstick is the same as a physical one - you are basically seeing the bit of the dipstick between the top and bottom marks, so if the electronic version shows half way then that is the same as halfway between top and bottom marks on a physical dipstick - or about half a litre of oil. Most people would not top up if the level is midway between the marks on a physical dipstick, but they would perhaps monitor the levels more regularly to ensure there isn't a leak.

There is a risk from over filling with oil, don't forget, so don't rush to throw too much oil in it. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks for your time RRSTDV8, and for explaining, i just found these 3x attachments that apparently allow you to check the oil level cold, with out having to take it for a drive and get it warm and then wait for 12mins to check it. So will try to see if this works for me so i can keep checking it regularly. And next time i get a job i will buy some axle stands so i can get uneath and finally clean all the old oil away so i can spot if i have a new leak more easerly. Thanks for tip on over filling. Hoping once the IID tool shows up it will make my LR owner experience slightly more relaxed.
