Does petrol RRS have oil dilution issues

I have a 2017 RR diesel Autobiography V8 4.4 and never realised when I bought it in Oct 2021 that it would give me so much concern. I don’t regularly do long distances. Saw a 5 V8 RRS autobiography petrol, would I have issues with oil dilution or any other common problems. The RRS is 2015 with 17k miles, looks impressive. Thanks for your help.

No, the SCV8 is pretty bulletproof. The only issue you will have is paying for the petrol because of the permagrin caused by a heavy foot Rolling with laughter

You HAVE to get the crossover coolant pipe replaced with the upgraded version though, otherwise you could suffer a catastrophic failure and a cooked engine.

The pipe in question usually starts to perish around the 5-7yr mark, and when it finally fails, it's without warning and no chance to save the engine. --

Hi Naks

I have the 5l V8 s/c like yours and LOVE it!

Is the crossover coolant pipe upgrade an easy/cheap job? Is it the pipe you can see if you remove the plastic engine cover?

Mine's a 2013 and I don't think it's been done so will get done ASAP.

Thanks a lot

I do hope it's the one at the front of the engine, and not the heater one at the rear of the engine. I think it is referred to as the heater X over pipe or possibly manifold.

It's the one that sandwiched between the engine block and the supercharger, so quite a big job labour-wise.

While you're at it, replace the supercharger oil as well, as the oil filler is at the back of it. I also had the water pump replaced, but that is probably not necessary.

After this preventative job, my fuel consumption improved quite a bit, not sure why.

Thanks Naks - hugely useful reply as always.

I’ll get mine checked with a boroscope camera thing.

I’d love to know the failure rate - my LR indie (who I rate very highly) hasn’t heard of the issue but he admitted he doesn’t look after many 5.0 V8s.

I wonder if this is more or less common (per car built with each engine globally) than the crank failure on the SDV6?!

All the best,

Matt

Ps - just fitted new stainless exhaust tips from Powerfull (mine were a little rusty) and they look awesome - just slightly larger diameter as they fit over the top of the old ones but still look “stock” to the casual glance. 2014 L494 V8 s/c Autobiography Dynamic

That picture is not relevant to a RRS2 S/C because it is pipe LR018275 from a 5.0L Naturally Aspirated Engine as fitted to the D4, RRS1 etc. Don't think they ever fitted the N/A engine to the RRS2 unless it was for a specific market but wouldn't know.

N/A to the Left, S/C to the Right, as the S/C pipe consists of two parts wondered if it is remotely possible to replace it without actually removing the Supercharger, think it would be worth a try as couldn't be any worse off if it didn't work, would think if the heater manifold one at the rear of the engine had to be replaced would certainly have to remove S/C.

Sorry, you're right Col, my mistake

the new part is a one-piece part, unlike the previous part

there's a chap in the US who's making an aluminium part, as found on some L405s: https://www.rangerovers.net/threads/alumin...er.353338/

That's rather odd, do you have the part number for the one piece pipe? as L/R are still listing it as two pieces, if I read it correctly the original part numbers LR050935 & LR050934 are saying no longer available although they are available as pattern parts i.e Britpart. one number LR050934 does appear to supersede to LR090630 the other part that goes with that is LR092992 but that is for later cars, so not sure if that half will fit earlier cars though. Not having seen a new pipe I did wonder if it means still in two parts but each bit was moulded as one piece as opposed to what looks a bit like two halves bonded together.

Cheers
Col

they are items 17 (LR090630) & 18 (LR092992)

but tbf, I just told my indie to replace the crossover coolant pipe, and they knew exactly what to do, since they'd seen many such failures. --

Just do the oil and filter change when the service tells you and you will be ok. The algorithm estimates when fuel dilution has reached the level when the oil needs changing.
