Cutting out whilst driving

Hi again all,
Please could someone throw some light on my current issue as my car has given me an early Christmas present.
I have just been out in my 2011 RRS 3.0 HSE and it was driving as normal.
When it warmed up it started to act like it was having a misfire and started to get progressively worst.
On my way home it started to cut out on me without any warning, I’d pull over, switch off and restart and carry on until it cut out again.
Thankfully I got home and will get round to looking at it after Christmas. The other issue that it has is the fuel sender wire on top of the tank, this has been playing up now on and off for a couple of month’s however I’ve not experienced this issue prior tonight.

Thanks in advance for any help and guidance.
Steve

I will ask the obvious, but do you have plenty of fuel in it ? as you say something about a fuel sender issue, only there is a TSB around with regards to the wiring on the sender which can also give false fuel level readings. Failing that I think you may need to have any fault codes read if there are any, which may point you in the right direction.

Cheers
Col

Hi Col, yes I only filled it up yesterday and from a fuel station that we always use.
I think I will need to get it on a computer after Christmas. I was surprised not to have any warning lights on the dash.
Thanks again
Steve

I have the same year and spec. This was happening to me a couple of years ago. I thought fuel problems, battery, brake light switch. Sometimes dashboard lights came on,sometimes not. What seemed to happen when it was stopping was a message saying vehicle was lowering. I related the tale of woe to a local independent. He said straight away faulty crank angle sensor. A diagnostic check said he was right. New sensor fitted, been great since.

From what I understand, if you have the fuel gauge sender issue, even if you have a full tank the car thinks you are running out and executes a protocol to protect the the injection system and cuts the engine out.
This is what I had in mine and the only warning was the gauge suddenly dropped during a journey then it cut out. There is a fix involving repairing a wire in the tank, or you can fit the senders (there are 2 to buy, obviously).
Of course it may not be this, you probably need the fault codes read.

Thank you, the only thing is I don’t have any lights come on it just cuts out. I’m getting it on my mates fault reader after Christmas.

Thank you for your comments and what you are saying makes perfect sense it’s just it’s not done this prior when the sender fault has been there. I was hoping to wait for better weather before having to drop the tank.

I have to confess that rather than get dirty and really smelly I took it to the indi I used at the time, so all new but quite expensive. I don't envy you doing it yourself but fingers crossed Bow down

I don't know if you have a copy of the Technical Bulletin, but here is a link to it I posted a few years back just in case you don't have it, imagine it will still be current.

Col, that is great thank you. Thumbs Up
I don’t believe that Land Rover haven’t placed a recall on the fault as it’s very common.

I think at one time they would repair it FOC if anybody had the issue, but this is L/R so unlikely the will do anything now as they will probably say the time frame has expired, but could always quote the Tech Bulletin and try I suppose.

Cheers

Col, I will give them a bell tomorrow as that is when they start back after Christmas.
After doing some research it’s looking more like the Crankshaft sensor, again this was a recall on 2012 models and mine is late 2011. I’m thinking of once it’s back working to get rid of it but it’s such a good motor when it’s working.
I hope you had a great Christmas and all the best for 2022.

Hi, and a happy new year to you, the problem with these vehicles are they are a Love Hate relationship, as soon as it is running properly again the chances are you will change your mind and want to keep it, until you have another issue then it will be a piece of junk and I'm getting rid of it. Laughing

Cheers
Col

*UPDATE*
Car finally fixed, it was a broken fuel wire between the tank and engine.
Now I’ll remove the plate and sell the thing before another RR issue starts again.
