If you mean the small number of snapped crankshafts, then no, the crankshaft wasn't changed over the years.

My 2018 snapped it's crank . I have just bought extended warranty in case it happens again . Before buying the warranty I enquired as to whether it would cover a crank failure as it's a know manufacturer's defect with a bulletin issued . The warranty company said it would as all replacement engines have an upgraded crank and thus it wouldn't be a manufacturer's defect if it went again . Whether that is true or not I don't know but either way at least I won't have to pay for repair . You may say it's a small number of snapped crankshafts. However, name me another engine which is known for snapped crankshafts, that has been a continuing fault for over 12 years? I'll pull up a chair as I know it's going to be a long wait. |

Most manufacturers have their own problems, for instance Porsche had bore score on 997 and most others will have some problem. If you don’t want one then don’t buy one…..simple really Joined the X5 45e club

Not to mention the 997 infamous IMS bearing that was modelled on a washing machine bearing - only worse (don't ask me how I know)! |

the issue with the cheese cranks is that JLR wash their hands off the problem, and most people affected then end up with massive repair bills.

I have purchased one, a late 2017 RRS. I don’t see where you get off on minimising the issue. I’m still sat on this chair waiting to find out about other engines that the crank snaps on. |

At least if you're sat on that chair you won't be driving your RRS and risking the crank snapping. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Isn't the issue that it's not their engine - it's a Ford / PSA engine adapted for Land Rover's use and produced in Ford's factory. I guess they could have paid Ford to redesign the crank and then take the future breakages of the old version on the chin, but the question is - how many have actually failed? It has been suggested hereabouts by a couple of LR indies that the crank failures are usually associated with low oil levels. Not helped by the engine not giving a low oil warning, of course. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

Didn't JLR take over the production of these engines in 2012? -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport Supercharged V8 HSE Dynamic Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Where to start...... https://www.drivingline.com/articles/5-fat...-fix-them/ https://www.alfabb.com/threads/broken-crankshaft.177340/ https://www.econologie.com/forums/econolog...9-660.html https://www.subaruforester.org/threads/200...ft.120394/ A lovely example by Ford. There is no such thing as the perfect engine by any manufacturer. Engines are literally trying to tear themselves apart with the forces exerted on them with each rotation. Joe |
