Fragments in oil filter

Hello everyone,

I've come to ask for your opinion on some scary news. My 2007 RRS TDV6 comes from overhaul with engine oil change, gearbox oil change, axles and transfer case. It has traveled 390,000 kms and I maintain it every year.
However, my mechanic alerted me to fragments found in the oil filter. I have read the horrors of crankshaft failures and I would like your opinion. The car drives very well and no suspicious engine noise. Except for clicking noises at cold start.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

If you still have the old oil get it sampled in a test lab, having the material identified is a starting point.

I did not collect the old oil but I did recover the filter.

Try flushing the filter with new oil with the hope that small particles of material in the filter is captured in the sample and tell the lab to identify?

Yes very good idea, I will also help myself with a brush.

I have to go on vacation and do 3000 kms over 2 weeks. Do you think I'm taking a risk?

Personally, I wouldn't drive the vehicle.

I think you need to gain a proper inspection and diagnosis. Kev

The glitter could be white metal from crankshaft bearings, get it tested.

Doubt its from the head, but as stated white metal bearings is possible, could be lots of things but I think it would be pretty noisy. I would not like to be using it until you get a diagnosis or at least get another oil change or at least a filter change to see if the new filter has anything. If nothing, then it gives you peace of mind for your holiday. You don't want it to be a really expensive holiday. If draining the oil check the drain plug for swarf as it may have a magnet on it (oh your particles are non magnetic, forget that) Good luck Range Rover Sport (gone): Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe: 992 Porsche Carrera 4S: Range Rover Fifty P400e

Is this metal attracted by a magnet?

You are right, I would like to disassemble the filter myself, but I am afraid I will not be able to put it back correctly. Especially at the level of the nipple. If you had a procedure?

No. White metal is an alloy of tin, lead, zinc and maybe some other stuff like bismuth. None of the constituents are attracted to a magnet. The backing of the bearing is usually steel which would be attracted to a magnet.

I'd be concerned that a bearing was breaking up. That's going to be a new engine (or at the least a rebuild) if you drive it and the crank snaps.

Best advice to not drive it until you have established what the metal is and where it's come from. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Have a look on youtube. Lots of videos regarding oil/filter change. Thumbs Up Range Rover Sport (gone): Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe: 992 Porsche Carrera 4S: Range Rover Fifty P400e
