If you still have the old oil get it sampled in a test lab, having the material identified is a starting point. |

I did not collect the old oil but I did recover the filter. |

Try flushing the filter with new oil with the hope that small particles of material in the filter is captured in the sample and tell the lab to identify? |

The glitter could be white metal from crankshaft bearings, get it tested. |

Doubt its from the head, but as stated white metal bearings is possible, could be lots of things but I think it would be pretty noisy. I would not like to be using it until you get a diagnosis or at least get another oil change or at least a filter change to see if the new filter has anything. If nothing, then it gives you peace of mind for your holiday. You don't want it to be a really expensive holiday. You are right, I would like to disassemble the filter myself, but I am afraid I will not be able to put it back correctly. Especially at the level of the nipple. If you had a procedure? |

No. White metal is an alloy of tin, lead, zinc and maybe some other stuff like bismuth. None of the constituents are attracted to a magnet. The backing of the bearing is usually steel which would be attracted to a magnet. I'd be concerned that a bearing was breaking up. That's going to be a new engine (or at the least a rebuild) if you drive it and the crank snaps. Best advice to not drive it until you have established what the metal is and where it's come from. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |
