preventative maintenance

Hi, just doing a bit (a lot) of reading up on the crankshaft fails on the 3.0 sdv6 engines on these cars. Can this happen to any 3.0, any year model, any mileage or is it a certain model year? Is there any preventative maintenance to do to avoid this? My car is 15 plate 2016MY and is on 41000 miles and has been faultless so far......Are LR aware of this happening?

You might benefit -reduce the risk- from oil changes every 6000 mls with the right oil 5W30 WSS–M2C934–B. (a so called C1 oil) RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux

There is no evidence that more frequent oil changes help at all. It is more important to keep a healthy oil level Joined the X5 45e club

Just try and find a warranty that would cover the engine......there is another post somewhere, it’s not as easy as it used to be Joined the X5 45e club

There seems to be a relationship between the right oil, long oil change periods, oil dilution and the life span of the DPF. Not all particles will be burned during regenerations. The SAP elements in the oil will build up. This will over the years result in Increasing DPF pressure , more frequent regens and stress on the engine.
Shorter oil change periods and the right spec oil will help to keep the engine (and the turbo's!) healthy and might reduce the risk of a crankshaft failure. This is not hard evidence, but common technical sense. RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux

It's a good question and you will not get an answer, which will be "the answer". That means: yes, more oil changes can help to avoid it, but you have no guarantee.
I ended with selling my wonderful Firenze red RRS with 78000km because of the possibility of this issue.
I couldn't arrange myself to agree the possibility of a crankshaft issue. I wouldn't sell it, if the issue was not "high frequent" and through all model years. Range Rover Sport HST D350

Would DPF flssh clean help reduce regen frequencies?

Ie remove DPF..flash clean and put back on.

We look after a lot of 3.0 models now. We've replaced a few engines, but these have all been on cads we haven't looked after previously, and every one has been low on oil when recovered in...

We have not had an engine failure on any 3.0 we have serviced as per the JLR schedule Thumbs Up

Cool..

But what are your views DPF clean?

Will that reduce number of regens?

Interesting comments Mickey.
I have just had the oil level sender in the sump replaced under warranty on my 2017 L494 last month.
I noticed that I could not pull up the oil level info on the screen.
Clearly if this sender fails due to oil incursion into the wiring you have no way of checking the oil level.
Plenty written about the lack of a dipstick!
Anyway it is possible this failure could lead to a low oil level with no indication to the owner and engine failure?
Could this be the indirect cause of the crank failures?
To remove the sump to replace the unit and wiring LR Artarmon NSW moved the front diff forward, is this the standard procedure?

@Disco_Mikey
Sounds interesting.
I checked very often the oil level - every 10 days approx. I also took care to have it on max. Honestly - my L494 haven't took any drop of oil. The oil dilution message popped up once.
I took care to take it on longer journeys, to fill in premium Diesel without FAME etc.
At the end I took the decision to sell it. Was a great car during my ownership and I loved to drive it, but I couldn't handle the possibility of a broken crankshaft on my holiday journey with a 2 year old child in the car..

Now, I switched to Volvo. With the new D300 and D350 in the L461 I see a possibility to come back to the RR community Smile the new six-inline Diesel engines should be awesome.
