Has anyone had any experience driving with the Michelin CrossClimates in 275/45/20?

I recently fitted the crossclimates in 275/45R20 and I'm so glad I did. It's still early days but the roads have been a mixture of heavy rain, ice and snow and I've found the tyres to be excellent. I was concerned about road noise being a winter type tread pattern but no need, they're the quietest I've had on the RRS. I took advantage of an untouched snow covered car park just to try accelerating, braking and S turns to see how they coped, and I was impressed. On a side road I was nipping on when I unknowingly went over a low bit which under the snow was a fairly deep puddle, I've no idea if the snow was floating on top or if it was all just slush, I was through it before realising what had happened but saw the spray out the side and in mirror, there was barely a twitch in the steering where I know my previous tyres would probably have let me know about it (also Michelin & Continentals)

As you say the reviews are good, coming in high in both the winter and summer ratings so I hope they are as good in summer, although my driving style is less likely to test them much in dry weather. Just my opinion but the way I feel about them now I'll be fitting them to the wife's Evoque when the time comes.....if I can still afford them Laughing 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

I’m very new to ranger rover sport ownership but my car came with Nexians all round and I’m wondering if that’s why it’s terrible to drive when running over the grooves that lorries leave in the road , feels dangerous at times , are Range Rover sports normally like this .

My last set of tyres did exactly that, twitched and tried to follow white lines, road patches etc. it was quite unnerving especially in the wet. I put it down to having different fronts to rears, the previous set of Continentals didn't do that (would never recommend them though due to the bad edge wear). As mentioned above the crossclimates feel totally steady, no twitching or line following so far, so I'd think it was more tyre choice than RRS's. 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

Some say to increase the size of the tyre to 275/45/20 instead of 275/40/20 as it’s a better ride , would this be ok or would it affect the Speedo reading .

I'm still to check mine against the GPS but I reckon it should be more accurate. I know the 40's were 3mph under at 60mph, so it should even it out. 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

I have 275/45s and my speedo is spot on checked against TomTom GPS.

Sorry, just noticed you are talking about 20", I am on 21"

I have run both 275/45x20" and 275/45x21" and as Dave B said on the 21's it is spot on compared to GPS, we also have a lot of roadside speed warning cameras here and the digital readout on dash and camera are exactly the same so 20" rims should not make any real difference to worry about. If it's suggested suggest changing wheel/tyre size in the CCF files don't bother as it won't make a blind bit of difference to the speedo reading, except possibly to the mileage distance covered and dash mpg "lie 'o' meter" reading and that will be minimal.

Cheers
Col

Strange thing is, my Disco Commercial is on 275/45x20s, and the speedo is again bang on with the GPS tachograph display.

For anyone who is running the General Grabber AT3, How do you find it for road noise, comfort and wear?

I am leaning towards the AT3 as an all round choice. Pete

I found the Grabber AT3 to be very good on road. No noise issue (especially when compared to the previous version the AT which got a bit loud as it wore), wear seemed to be good. Only issue is that it is an AT so is a little compromised on road compared to a road tyre. But remembering that, it is an excellent all rounder. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

After one year on AT3 tyres and about 4-5000 miles I'm really pleased with them. No more noise or reduction in comfort compared to previous road biased Pirelli There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley

That all sounds really positive for the AT3. I have never had tyres like this so have no reference to work from. Now I have located the cause of the noise coming from the passenger side, and cured that, there is practically no cabin noise and I don't want to spoil that if I can help it. My Pirellis were probably half worn when I got the car and I am not far off the limit now, so have never run it yet on 'New' tyres. Pete

Just to add my ten penny worth, a word of caution if anyone is thinking of Uniroyal Rainsport 3 tyres. I found them great tyres with a low wear rate BUT after about a year or so of trying to find out why the RRS seemed to wander across the road I discovered that it was the tread pattern that was causing the problem. That was after many trips to the 4 wheel alignment place and driving my indie nuts by continually asking them to check and recheck bushes etc. I was on 275 40 20's. Now on Pirelli Scorpion Zero and they have cured the problem. Robin

Hi Robin.

That sounds just as annoying as the rattling I have had coming from the passenger side! (now sorted Thumbs Up )

I hadn't put Uniroyal on the shortlist but thanks for the warning.

I get so stressed when it comes to buying tyres and I think you have highlighted the reason why! Laughing Pete

Yeh! Hence the advantage of the forum. Its not just for moans about poor engineering/build quality or poor dealer performance. You can tap into other peoples experience. It may not be the perfect answer for you but it sure helps guide your path. Thumbs Up Robin
