Help ...Incorrect Power Steering Fluid?

Hi all

Help and advice needed please

So I needed an urgent top up of my steering fluid due to my steering making whining sounds and as Halfords don't stock the needed Cold Climate PAS oils like the OEM Land Rover one or the likes of Ravenol that I've seen on some websites I went on the Texaco (UK) website as that's the recommended fluid in the handbook. The website directed me to a local garage that apparently stocked it....so I rang them and they confirmed they could top up my steering fluid with the right stuff.

When I got there the young chap brought out Comma Automatic Transmission and PSF Fully Synthetic fluid as per the link below. It was red in colour.

https://www.jgs4x4.co.uk/comma-automatic-t...l-mvatf5l/

I immediately pointed out to the guy that didn't look like the right stuff and that it should be specific to the car...and usually it's a green colour. He laughed and said it's all ok and that this stuff will be fine...he only topped up maybe less than half a litre over the existing fluid. He even jokingly asked "Don't you trust me?". After bleeding the steering by turning it left and right the whining stopped and so seems to have done the trick.

However I'm worried that I now have a mixture of steering fluids and I've read that Dexron based and ATF fluids aren't meant to be applied to our vehicles (mine is a 2006 L320 2.7tdv6).

Has anyone got any thoughts or experience please? Do I now need to flush out the whole system to avoid longer term damage?

Thanks in advance.
Kozzy

Some fluid is better than a noisy pump

I guess you need to fix the leak first
And then you could put new correct fluid in

Yes, I guess so as the noise has gone now. So the fact that the reservoir amount was less than minimum, does that suggest a leak?

I now wish I had just ordered from the link you sent me from my earlier thread 🙄.

Cheers

Its not going to cause an issue in the short term - as said any oil is better than none if it is low.

However when you are able I would change the oil to the correct stuff and do whatever else is needed to the PS system.

But no need to worry in the short term.
