I've enjoyed a number of his videos over the years, but he does have a single-minded view of what the Defender should be - basically t should be an agricultural thing that you can fix with a hammer and some swearing.

His thing about fitting winches is hyperbole - the LR dealership messed up when fitting the TFL's winches. That doesn't mean you can't fit a winch, just that the dealer used is inept.

I understand that he wants to be able to turn vehicles in to overlanding devices. This is a fairly niche requirement, however, and LR certainly aren't going to focus on making a vehicle for that market. They have decided to market at more affluent markets, not central Africa or to overlanders. And they'll sell plenty of them in the market they have chosen to chase.

He says the 202 Defender is unsuitable for the "true off roader". I assume he means someone who is going to take the vehicle to places you can hardly walk to, let alone drive to. If so, that's probably true. It'll get you there but you're not likely to want to take it there because of the price of the thing. I suspect that many "true off roaders" don't buy new vehicles anyway - they know they'll get trashed so they buy second hand stuff that won't matter if it gets full of mud / water.

Plenty of original Defenders never go off road, strangely. Many are owned by people who have them because they're cool. They commute in them. Drive to the supermarket in them. They don't go off road in them. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

in a nutshell

He did not get invited to the Namibia launch
LR did not give him a long term test vehicle
LR did not design a 1950's agricultural tractor to replace the 1948 agricultural tractor
His mate Ronny (who he quotes) in his own Defender review test was totally clueless about TR (yet he thinks he is the benchmark)
TFL are racking up clicks, so keep pushing the story of their "new defender" problems as often as they can

Lets say he may be slightly Toyota leaning Rolling with laughter Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

say what you want about TFL but they've been pretty honest about it and not really their fault that the cars Censored is it. I've been in that kinda position before with dealers and it just a massive ballache(wasn't LR btw). It feels like its going to drag forever and you lose all faith in the vehicle itself.

It has done quite a few K's off the tarmac and in the wilds of Australia .. such as Cape York etc.
It is pretty well protected, in addition to the Bull bar, winch, RAI, it has rock sliders, step out bars, full
under body protection.. i went with the e-diff option when i purchased it new, so it is also extremely capable
It now shares the garage with our new Deffer which we optioned TR2 and the rear diff, that will be doing a
complete tour of Oz from around May/June next year

itd be cool if someone did an Apples to Apples comparision. Ie took an old defender. took a new defender. went to some random inaccessible place in the world to see how they'd fair.

It would be cool. Both would need to be "factory standard", however, for it to be fair.

That might be tricky as most old Defenders, other than the investment pieces, are likely modified in some way with lift kits, huge tyres, dislocation axles etc., all being popular mods. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
