Hello all,

Given I’m not driving so much at the moment, I’ve popped a low amp trickle charger in the terminals under the bonnet to keep the battery going. As I’ve got an MY15.5 I’ve also got that small ancil battery for the auto stop/start gizmo.

I’m wondering if anyone knows if the charger will keep both batteries topped up, or just the main? I find the DashCam runs the ancil battery down anyway, so good to get some charge into it too.

I know the book says to remove the battery for charging, but also that the dealerships charge on those terminals under the bonnet too, and as I’m only trickle charging 2–4 amps I don’t think it’ll cause any problems.

I’ve connected my C Tek charger to the under bonnet terminals on both my L494 & left them both for weeks at a time. No issues from either including stop / start  16MY Estoril Blue SVR.............

Do you set it to AGM mode ? 2015 SDV6 306bhp Dynamic santorini black.

Search back and I posted a how to trickle charge the main battery with a £10 solar panel trickle charger on the dash inside the car. I have used this method to try to keep my various modern LR products batteries trickle charged when I was going to sea and leaving the car on my drive up driven for 3-4 months.
Regarding the aux battery for the auto stop/start - last time I called LRA out to get my 2015.5 SDv6 going they advised that the auxy battery only charges when the car is moving and the load on the alternator is low enough, it is handled by the BMS with no way to over ride it so you might have to take that battery out and charge it separately. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thanks all, and thanks Tim. Yes I found your post on Solar trickle charging, but decided against that idea as I couldn’t find a decent panel with a regulator built into into.

Did whip the ancil battery out and topped it up that way in the end. MY15.5 HSE

How do i know if my 2017 RRS HSE has a second battery?

It should have stop start, and assuming you do, it will. It’s in the right hand side panel in the boot Joined the X5 45e club

My 2017 has stop start but doesn't have the second battery. There is a capacitor backup system where the second battery used to reside behind the right rear side panel in the luggage area. Not sure when LR changed the system but certainly late 2017 models had done away with the second battery.
